This year I listened to more music, both old and new, than I have in recent years. I discovered a lot of stuff to which I'll be listening for many years to come.

Khruangbin is probably my most played artist of 2018. Such a nice blend of different genres.
I've never paid much attention to Olafur Arnalds before but I liked his most recent album. When I watched Fritz Lang's Frau im Mond a few months ago I randomly put it on as soundtrack, the track 'undir' came on during the finale and I thought it fitted absolutely perfectly:

Me neither. He's very hit or miss with me. That album, for instance, has Numbers on the Boards, one of my top five favourite rap songs ever for sure, and King Push which is another solid song, but literally nothing else of note. Very perplexing. He seems to try on the singles but mail in the rest.

santosh had an amazing year, but vada chennai soundtrack - a celebration of the north chennai street songs he almost singlehandedly brought into the mainstream of tamil film music - is my favorite.

are there any great country records from this year beyond the john prine? i didn't like a lot of the big contenders much (kacey, colter wall, ashley mcbryde, etc).

I was actually telling a friend the other day that I thought Robyn's 'Missing U' was an inch-perfect pop song. Sounds so familiar, yet so fresh.

I think if I'm being honest with myself the only albums I've listened to all the way through this year were Randy Newman's whole discography on repeat. And the "Young Girls of Rochefort" OST.

Which songs do you like on Daytona? I'd say, like, Come Back Baby and If You Know You Know are solid 4.5/5s, and Santeria is a 3.5/5, but the other four range from borderline listenable to adjectly terrible. The Rick Ross and Kanye cameos are the worst.

i like the whole album, really! i do think it's been a week year for music (and film, maybe not books though), so in a normal year it probably would not make it onto my list. i really like hard piano which is obviously the rick song. I find it very easy to disengage from lyric in hip-hop music and assert beat understanding.... tho I also think the album is pretty overall consistent. what would meek do is hilarious

The only two on that list that I think really sit among, like, my top 50 of the decade are ye and double negative. be the cowboy might too.

tbh i ain't really listened to shit. heard some good film ost stuff. lots of good tunes from various hong sang-soo flicks. repeatedly rewatched some scenes from some films that included good music choreographed against really good sequences (that money scene from johnnie to's throw down; that extended om shanti om song/scene from farah khan's om shanti om; etc.). listened to joan armatrading's the weakness in me a bunch for some reason (getting back in touch with my inner melancholy mb). just listened to angelina by wiinston and that was aight. idk

I like those Santosh Narayanan and John Prine joints, nrh! That's amazing that Prine is still making new music.
I also like that Holiday track, bure420. Terrific twee-pop!

The following are stuff not from 2018 that I gave a 10/10 and 9/10 to:

no albums, only single tracks.
And mostly only stuff from the 20th century, cause I never got into 21st century music in the first place.
Most of the songs and compositions were from films (which is probably where I get 80% of my listening choices from nowadays).

Nearly impossible to do, but here are the 10 best songs I've heard this year. Limited to one per artist.
