1987 Poll 2.0

by greennui
Pick your favourite movies of 1987 (according to IMDB), up to 20 films.
20-film ballots must be ranked as follows (with point totals assigned):
Five tiers 5-4-3-2-1
Four tiers 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5
Three tiers 5-3-1
Two tiers 4-2
One tier (aka unranked) 3
Ballot totals that aren't divisible by the number of tiers must be unranked. So 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19 film ballots are unranked.

interesting, it's 1987 almost everywhere else, and it used to be 1987 on imdb also.
i don't know how strictly we follow imdb dates these days... is anyone else going to vote for it in this poll? i'm always worried with films like this that if we leave it out of the 1987 poll, by the time the 1986 poll comes around, imdb will have fixed the date back to 1987 again, and we'll never have a chance to vote for it

Everyone likes Eric Rohmer except me, it seems. I don't despise him. He's just... OK.
There are already a number of great movies I'm leaving off the provisional Top 20 below. Can no room be found, Karl, for Au Revoir les Enfants, Daughter of the Nile, Wish You Were Here, Zegen, The Surrogate Woman, Babette's Feast, Shy People, Dark Eyes, Blind Chance, Strawman, and Raising Arizona? Do you really intent to leave Raising Arizona off the list?
Come to think of it, I might post a very different list in a month, even if I don't see anything new.
Must re-watch Matewan.
One of the best films of 1987 I saw last night - Zaorski's banned-in-Poland Mother of Kings. But I'll go with the Palme d'or for the top slot.
Under the Sun of Satan (Pialat)
Mother of Kings (Zaorski)
The King of Children (Chen)
Where Is the Friend's Home? (Kiarostami)
Monologue (Gopalakrishnan)
Wedding in Galilee (Khleifi)
A Little Bit of Soul (Kenović)
A Tale from the Past (Anagnosti)
Woman Demon Human (Huang)
Garden of Desires (Khamraev)
The Last Judgment (Frank)
The Elephant Keeper (Yukol)
The Spy (Balayan)
Tomorrow Was the War (Kara)
A Girl from Hunan (Xie & U)
A Woman Alone (Holland)
A Forgotten Tune for the Flute (Ryazanov)
Housekeeping (Forsyth)
The Dead (Huston)

A lot of other neat stuff alongside it on that 'channel' -- I think I'm really interested in new-to-me Brazilian director Ozualdo Candeias now. There's even a Moldovan (co) production called Palms. A little late for the COMO, but...

Hong gao liang / Red Sorghum (1987, Yimou Zhang)
You have two spots more now, as BICYCLERAN is 1989 on Imdb (great film, though!), and RED SORGHUM is 1988 (otherwise it would have easily made my list somewhere near the top - probably below OPERA at the 6th spot).
