1970 Poll 2.0

Post by greennui »

Pick your favourite movies of 1970 (according to IMDB), up to 20 films.

20-film ballots must be ranked as follows (with point totals assigned):
Five tiers 5-4-3-2-1
Four tiers 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5
Three tiers 5-3-1
Two tiers 4-2
One tier (aka unranked) 3

Ballot totals that aren't divisible by the number of tiers must be unranked. So 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19 film ballots are unranked.

Hopefully I'll get to watch some, although my ability to DL might be in limbo for a bit as I move.

I watched two 1970 movies a couple of days ago, both by British horror director Freddie Francis. Naturally, I loved the one everyone hates and hated the one everyone loves: (1) the cult fav Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny & Girly (Francis's own favourite of his own pictures, included on TSZDT) was just too fucked up for my taste. Eeek!, but (2) the notorious bad movie classic Trog is deeply endearing for my taste: Joan Crawford, in her final screen appearance, earnestly performing the maternal melodrama of an anthropology scholar raising a murderous Ice Age-era troglodyte as her adopted child!!! Of course, Joan is even scarier than the movie monster.

Thanks, removed. Let's hope it doesn't bounce back to 1970 during the poll.

Ah... I love Joan, and have kind of been ignoring this one out of fear it would kind of just be sad. Didn't realize it was 1970, so maybe I'll have to finally bite the bullet.

Yeah but the official IMDb date on the main page is what we go by. Unfortunately, often.

One of the champers here is too modest perhaps to admit to subtitling a great Czech movie from this year
in 1969, i was modest.
in 1970, i am going to promote my subbing efforts shamelessly.

Radúz and Mahulena (Petr Weigl)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0350027/

i see there is an upgrade available on kg and i am not sure if it uses my subs or if there are some other (official) but anyway...

i deeply admire Jan Tříska (the actor playing Raduz).
he was an excellent theater actor.
it disqualified him from being cast in the new-wave films (preference of either the non-actors or actors without big stage gestures & pathos).
as Raduz he goes full pathetic on screen and it's excellent.
O inexpressible anxiety of loneliness!
My parched brain boils within my head.
Everything gives rise to monsters.
After exhausting night, when comes the dawn, it seems, a deep wound opens on the sky and the burning world becomes submerged in blood.

borsalino (jacques deray) - an epic bromance! not much of a film tho. and it caused a rift between these two - delon said belmondo was extremely petty about the number of close-ups and who would get top billing lol. they both seemed to enjoy playing gangsters in natty suits in 1930s marseilles

A Journey Around My Skull AKA Trip Around My Cranium (György Révész)

a cinematic adaptation of the eponymous book by Frigyes Karinthy
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/165 ... d_My_Skull
The distinguished Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy was sitting in a Budapest café, wondering whether to write a long-planned monograph on modern man or a new play, when he was disturbed by the roaring—so loud as to drown out all other noises—of a passing train. Soon it was gone, only to be succeeded by another. And another. Strange, Karinthy thought, it had been years since Budapest had streetcars. Only then did he realize he was suffering from an auditory hallucination of extraordinary intensity.

interesting! i couldn't find that film, but i found an earlier lefebvre, and watched about ten minutes, and the makavejev comparison seems right on. i was partly watching to judge whether i could understand the language well enough to watch a full movie (or even subtitle one) and i could only get about 80% of it, sometimes because my french isn't perfect, and sometimes because the audio quality isn't great. so i don't think i'll be able to watch, but i'd definitely be interested if a subbed version becomes available.

“Mother Sky” recorded in July 1970 for the soundtrack of Jerzy Skolimowski's film Deep End

[Verse 1]
I say madness is too pure like mother sky
I say madness is too pure like mother sky
I say madness is too pure like mother sky
I say madness is too pure like mother sky

[Verse 2]
I say madness is too pure like mother sky
I say madness is too pure like mother sky
Tell me what's the price of your life
Tell me what's the price of your life

[Bridge]
I say madness is too pure like mother sky
Tell me what's the price of your life
Tell me what's the price of your life
Tell me what's the price of your life

[Chorus]
Life and mother sky
And mother sky
And mother sky
And mother sky

[Verse 3]
I say madness is too pure like mother sky
Tell me what's the price of your life
I say madness is too pure like mother sky
I say madness is too pure like mother sky

[Outro]
Turning to desert
Turning to desert
Turning to desert
Shine like you
Critics also lauded Skolimowski's strategic use of colour. In an interview with NME in 1982, David Lynch said of Deep End: "I don't like colour movies and I can hardly think about colour. It really cheapens things for me and there's never been a colour movie I've freaked out over except one, this thing called Deep End, which had really great art direction."
