i feel like the "mainstream" favs are Duck Soup and maybe The Awful Truth, but Ruggles and Make Way for Tomorrow both have strong reputations in "cinephile" circles. i would've expected Make Way for Tomorrow to take it, though... on TLC it was a huge hit, maybe I'm biased from that. but a quick looksee suggests that MWfT is a more popular "fav" here, Ruggles is just on significantly more ballots

Ruggles also gave me the idea for my funnest trolling tactic when I lived in the States. I would tell these really patriotic Americans, "I'm way more American than you. You were just BORN here, I CHOSE to come here. That's the most American thing there is." No joke, I said that a ton of times, to seriously jingoistic Americans, and they never challenged it. Sometimes they would soften and agree, and sometimes they would just stew, but no one ever disagreed.

That's awesome, Curtis. That's now one of my favorite McCarey related stories, thanks for sharing.

Don't know/don't care what the average Joe thinks of McCarey, but our final list is heavily biased towards his 30's work which, funnily enough, also happens to include all of the films Curtis mentions. When you look at it that way I guess both mainstream and cinephile people don't differ much. Can't complain, Ruggles is a masterpiece, and the top 10 includes most of my favorites.
