well i could center the letters, then the date in the last frame. let's see what that would look like

i like the other one better and yeah those aren't perfectly centered but if it bugs you that much i can fix it  they'd need to be on separate layers

for comparison

Image

i'm gonna take a break now and watch a film. any other suggestions i can try to incorporate. maybe the date could be smaller like above :geek:

i try to resist that urge to center everything, it's the death of art

looks cool tho i think it would be better to leave the date off? it might make me think (if i were seeing it for the first time) that scfz was a film festival or something that happened a few years ago

Oops, poor choice of words. "In hommage to Jiri" might be better. Nothing happened, he just ghosted away. AFAIK, his blog is still active.

Yes, Funny but I thought about that too, but only in a delusional kinda way--history of odd scfz and all that. I like Rischka's Godard banner, last one with SCFZ on left. Awesome work by all.

The banner at the top of the forum right now? My browser says 1080x180

The empty white rectangle... I copied it with "snipping tool," using the part inside the black ribbon only, and measured it in paintbox.

Depending on your browser, browser settings, etc, the image might render to you in different dimensions, but the file itself is 1080x180

No, banners don't need to be exactly 1080X180! They just need to be, like, that general idea... wide, short strips for the top of the page. If it's 1250x250 or 1000x210 or whatever that's all fine

Oh, good! That means I won't be a dick if I say that I like any of the single-image banners better than all of the six-frame ones.

I think that Rischka's Three Landscapes picture is my favorite. The geometric lines are visually appealing and the clean, minimalist style should look good across all platforms (computers and phones). I also like that the 'scfz' name is easy to read, which would add to the overall clarity of the banner and makes the site more inviting imho.

I was messing around with the screenshot dimensions and found that if we go with 1080x180, it's a 1:6 aspect ratio. If we use a picture with 1328x207 dimensions, it's basically a 1:6.4 aspect ratio. I included one of each example below in case we want try to see which one fits better.

Here's the 1080x180 picture (from King Hu's Dragon Inn, 1967)
Image

and here's the 1328x207, which accidentally got rounded up to 1328x208 here but the difference should be negligible.
Image

The 1080 picture gives a little bit more 'headroom' but there isn't too much of a difference. I also played around with embedding the title into the image just to see if anyone likes that. By the way, should it lowercase (scfz) or uppercase (SCFZ)?

I think either upper or lower works fine, let it, and the font, suit the image and the aesthetics of the person creating it. I'm also fine with almost any of the options so far. Let's just put one up for a while and then change it periodically rather than fuss too much about finding "the right one" everyone will like, cause that ain't a thing that will exist.

So far I like Patrick's punk banners (especially the yellow one) and Rischka's Three Landscapes and the floating woman. The latter reminds me of Millais' painting of Ophelia, which appears in A Place in the Sun & Lars von Trier's Melancholia. No idea why the halo is floating above the face... maybe it's just a ripple.
