k. viswanath also passed away at 92, not very well known outside of south india but he was especially iconic for a series of melodramas, often centered around classical arts, the he made from the late '70s through the early '90s. they're fascinating movies, much thornier than their reputation suggests, but his death is very much an end of an era kind of thing - the sort of popular cinema his movies represented simply doesn't exist anymore, and is not likely to exist again.

by a weird coincidence vani jairam, who had sung for some of his most famous movies, died not long after. another one of those amazing careers, singing 1000s of songs, many of them considered classics.

Need to watch his films, they've been on my radar for years. Feels strange to be encouraged to explore someone's work after they're gone even if I've successfully done that with Rohmer/Chabrol and others in the past.

David Jude Jolicoeur (aka Trugoy the Dove) from hip hop group De La Soul. Always loved his music. Only 54 years old. :(

“We didn’t separate the two schools,” he told The New York Times in 2001. “We studied Bach and Ellington, Mozart and Art Tatum. When you start at 3, what you hear you play. I heard all these things.”

RIP to a beautiful man

tonight i'll watch the world, the flesh and the devil

Image

is mel ferrer the devil? looks like it from this poster. why demonize the puerto rican guy? hmm

listening to his album calypso - the first LP to sell over 1 million copies

EDIT: apparently mel ferrer isn't jose ferrer's son, that's miguel ferrer so. mel isn't puerto rican but his dad (aka dr. jose ferrer) was from cuba
