I caught up with this one just a couple years ago. Very much enjoyed this as well as a number of the other early ones starring Trevor Howard.
I would also recommend 'I See a Dark Stranger' (1946) and 'They Made Me a Fugitive' (1947) as another pair of his overlooked early works.

I also went through the Losey filmography and found this one in particular to be quite the visual surprise.
John Waters of all people speaks very highly of this picture too.

thanks for the recs - i think i watched five neame films last month (might suggest him for a director poll at some point), and on balance, i think i like his earlier films better than his more famous later ones, though there's interesting work throughout his career.

yeah as a film it's either amazing or terrible, and i think i decided it's the former. the filmmaking and cinematography excel the material, was my first impression. i didn't read about what losey was doing at the time - did he make modesty blaise to fund decadent vanity projects like boom? decent trade if so.

Indeed. This wouldn't be entirely shocking to me.

mhm, seems like Boom is a film i should definitely see!

the main reason i was inserting "guns & fitness" in my (early internet days) "about me" is i was too lazy to transcribe all that is said in this scene and insert it in my "about me" instead.

oh, thanks!!!
going now to read the articles called like "4 Ways To Remove Padding Words" (and similar) and then will make out of it my new "about me" that i will use on some newly infiltrated social media.
pity i made my entreé to reddit already few weeks ago (to figure out what's all the millenial buzz about gamestop).
i am still not yet on tiktok so i might use this new "about me" there (to scare a bunch of kids with short attention span).

    I had quite the month, courtesy of a few nicely placed vacation days leaving me with a stunning 77 films, 23 shorts and 2 mini-series seen for the first time, as well as 9 rewatches, which may just be a personal best in a single month, to push them out first they were:

    India Song (1975, Marguerite Duras) 7/10 --> 9/10
    Sedmikrásky / Daisies (1966, Vera Chytilová) 8 --> 8.5
    Western (2017, Valeska Grisebach) 9 --> 9
    -
    Cleo From 5 to 7 (1962, Agnès Varda) 8.5 --> 8.5
    Les créatures / The Creature (1966, Agnès Varda) 7 --> 8
    Daguerreotypes (1975, Agnès Varda) 5 --> 6
    Les glaneurs et la glaneuse / Gleaners & I (2000, Agnès Varda) 9 --> 9
    Les plages d'Agnès / The Beaches of Agnès (2008, Agnès Varda) 9 --> 9.5
    Visages, Villages / Faces, Places (2017, Agnès Varda) 9.5 --> 9.5

    The highlight was obviously the series of Agnès Varda rewatches, along with completing her available feature-length documentaries (1 remaining without subtitles) and a wonderful set of shorts - as well as Agnès Varda: From Here to There.

    The second highlight, at least in long time coming, was that I finally watched Godard and Miéville's 6/12 part mini-series "Six fois deux/Sur et sous la communication", which was quite the relation and anyone who is a fan of their work should seek it out. This also led me to explore Miéville's 4 solo films, which, along with her co-directed efforts with JLG shot her into my top 100 directors.

    Anyhow, here's the top first-time viewings of the month:

    9.5
    Innocence (2004, Lucile Hadzihalilovic)

    9s
    Après la réconciliation / After the Reconciliation (2000, Anne-Marie Miéville)
    Nippon Sengoshi - Madamu onboro no Seikatsu / History of Postwar Japan as Told by a Bar Hostess (1970, Shohei Imamura)

    8.5s
    Pre istine / Before the Truth (1967, Vojislav 'Kokan' Rakonjac)
    Zazidani / The Walled In (1969, Vojislav 'Kokan' Rakonjac)
    Nous sommes tous encore ici / We're Still Here (1997, Anne-Marie Miéville)
    Praznik / The Feast (1967, Djordje Kadijevic)

    8s
    Nemirni / The Naughty Ones (1968, Vojislav 'Kokan' Rakonjac)
    La niña santa / The Holy Girl (2004,Lucrecia Martel)
    Kad budem mrtav i beo / When I Am Dead and Gone (1967, Zivojin Pavlovic)
    Six fois deux/Sur et sous la communication / 6x2/Over and Under the Media (1976, Anne-Marie Miéville and Jean-Luc Godard) -
    Agnès de ci de là Varda / Agnes Varda: From Here to There (2011, Agnès Varda)
    La bouche de Jean-Pierre / Mimi / Parental Guidance (1996, Lucile Hadzihalilovic)
    Fish Tank (2009, Andrea Arnold)
    Quo vadis, Aida? (2020, Jasmila Zbanic)
    C.R.A.Z.Y. (2005, Jean-Marc Vallée)
    Naissance des pieuvres / Water Lilies (2007, Céline Sciamma)
    Druk / Another Round (2020, Thomas Vinterberg)
    A Room for Romeo Brass (1999, Shane Meadows)
    Lou n'a pas dit non / Lou Didn't Say No (1994, Anne-Marie Miéville)
    The Kid Detective (2020, Evan Morgan)
