i am listening to a nearly 2 hours long podcast about my fav Bohemian filmmaker Karel Vachek.
(among other things) there was said Karek Vachek liked (among other composers) Robert Kurka.
i never heard the name before...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kurka
He was mostly self-taught as a musician.
He is probably best known for the instrumental suite, The Good Soldier Schweik. This was inspired by Jaroslav Hašek's anti-war novel The Good Soldier Schweik, published in English translation in 1956.
thus i made a break in the podcast to listen to the music...

Rhoda And The Bad Seeds! They were my favorite local band back in the day; they lived in a row-house around the block from my apt., they put on shows and did film-screenings in their living room, two of them and me were the only people at a first-run matinee screening of Dawn Of The Dead... just massively cool people... but they never recorded anything, and I always thought they were just lost in the fog of times past. Until now.

PS: I think I was at this show, it seems like they only played that club once.

he is Bert (Albert) Romanutti (allegedly his grand-grandpa was Italian — not sure if it is a reality or a private myth).
in each of his songs, he appears as a specific alter ego persona and in this song (above), all those alter ego personas (from various songs) appear together (in a single song).
this band was started in 2016 but i noticed it (and investigated it) only yesterday — so they are probably rising to local fame these days (after five years, reaching a wider local audience).
i am mainly impressed by the lyrics of the songs which are an amalgam of irrational utterances interspersed with concocted words.
f.e. the song above is called PIŠ MI BÁSNĚ = WRITE ME POEMS and the lyrics are...
AURÁ-AMEN-A-DÉELFÓNIA = (concocted words)
TAK ZPÍVA-LA PANNA RIA = so sung maid Ria
V SURREÁL OMELÉTĚ STOJÍ ZNAMENÍ = there is a sign in the surreal omelette
STŘEDA JE DEN VŠEDNÍ = Wednesday is a weekday

KDYŽ PIJI HRB BRČKEM VÉELBLOUDOVI = when i drink through a straw from a humpback of a camel
ŇÁKÝ BUBLINY FOUKÁM = i blow some bubbles
Z TÝ FOTO-FATA MORGÁNY = out of this photo mirage
TEN HLÁSEK UJEDE MI = my voice falters

MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI

MÁM TY CHVÍLE RÁD = i like those moments
KOUKÁM JEN TAK = (when) i just look
TŘEBA Z RŮŽE = for example from pov of a rose
VŽDYŤ KOLIK NÁS JE = there is plenty of us

A TAK LETÍ LETĚL ČAS = and thus flies flied time
NA KOLENI SEDÍ KOS = on a knee sits a blackbird
KDYŽ PO-PO POUŠTÍ POTKÁ ČLOVĚK ČLOVĚKA = while in a desert a man meets a man
ŠATY DĚLAJI MOC = clothes give power (clothes mean a lot)

NŮ JO NO ALE = (senseless phrase)
NEJSEM NEJSEM PÁN = i am not i am not a lord
PAN EJDŽIBER SI MŇOUKÁ = Mr. Eijiber meows
TEN SEN SE ZDÁ ZDÁ ZDÁ = that dream is dreamt dreamt
NO TAK TEDA DÍKY MAMI = so, thanks mom

MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI MI
MÁM TY CHVÍLE RÁD = i like those moments
KOUKÁM JEN TAK = (when) i just look
TŘEBA Z RŮŽE = for example from pov of a rose
TENDLE NÁŠ SVĚT = there is plenty of us

ÁÁÁÁÁÁÁÁÁÁ
ÁÁÁÁÁÁÁÁÁÁ
ÁÁÁÁÁÁÁÁÁÁ
DĚKUJEM PANÍ ÚŽAS-NÁRAMNÁ = thanks Mrs. Amazing-Wonderful

PIŠ MI BÁSNĚ, PIŠ MI BÁSNĚ, PIŠ MI BÁSNĚ = write me poems, write me poems, write me poems
PIŠ MI BÁSNĚ, PIŠ MI BÁSNĚ, PIŠ MI BÁSNĚ = write me poems, write me poems, write me poems
however, my fav lyrics are probably from the song called PLODY MOŘÍ = FRUITS OF THE SEA
Fajn Jupí Krásný Nejlepší Nádherný. = Great Yippie Cute Best Splendid
Jestli se ptáš co, nebo kdo, tak jsem to Ty. = If you are asking "what?" or "who?", then me is you.
Pojďme si hrát, pane admirál, = Let's play, Mr. Admiral
nekonečno nekonečněkrát = infinity infinitely
krát krát krát krát krát. = multiplied multiplied multiplied multiplied multiplied
Filét, Suprh! = (semi-concocted words resembling something like Fillet, Super!)
four, jedna, three, dva, two, tři, one, čtyři, zero, pět, minus one, mínus jedna? = four, one, three, two, two, three, one, four, zero, five, minus one, minus one?
Vlllny moří, loďstva lidí = waves of the sea, fleet of humans
v jediný lodi. = in a single ship
Plody moří, s láskou tvoří = fruits of the sea make with love together
Frutti di mare. = frutti di mare

i expect that in a society governed by acid communism this is how mainstream pop might look like.
unfortunately, i don't expect that "Bert & Friends" gaining some popularity heralds the advent of acid communism (i would wish to be mistaken).

For whatever reason, I've gotten back into listening to a lot of music lately instead of watching movies, so I guess I'll be abusing this thread for a while as I catch up on a lot of stuff I've missed that may not be new to you crazy crate diggers, but that one at least was new.

But, really, my heart right now belongs to Sampa the Great

Question: What's your opinion on the state of cultural saturation for music today compared to previous eras? It's obvious certain pop music has a wide cultural reach in terms of it being hard to miss at least in some sense of awareness of its existence, say Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Cardi B, or Li'l Nas X most recently, but what about bands like Arcade Fire or TV on the Radio or Band of Horses? They sell tickets and "albums", are critically acclaimed, and of course will be well known among people who care about caring about music, but how much has awareness about them and/or their sound gone beyond that to the larger culture that doesn't really care about the music in a broad sense, say in contrast to the kind of cultural saturation bands like Radiohead or REM had, or whoever you think is a near analogy for Arcade Fire or the others? (Admittedly a US centric focus, but I'd also be interested in hearing what the case might be in other countries for whatever music over the last couple decades or so.)
