Taeksi woonjunsa (A Taxi Driver)
d. jang hoon

i'm glad someone else saw this! good drama w song kang-ho based on events of the gwangju uprising 1980

Image

a guy with little interest in politics inadvertantly plays an important part by ferrying a foreign journalist to the scene

Image

the driver's true identity wasn't known until publicity from this film prompted his son to get in touch so his story is invented

Image

this made me cry. i didn't know anything about these events and on reading up OF COURSE the US backed the right wing coup that killed thousands of people in gwangju in 1980. very fine performance by song kang-ho who mostly avoids the sentimental traps set by the director

PS also enjoyed a western

There's a rip on Youtube without the logo (search for Bottomless Bag) and a set of subs at KG that match up with it.

I'm glad he's still working (seven years for the first one, second one coming right on schedule...)

So that's good.

But I wonder if he can find anything new to include in this storyverse. Seeing the same stuff for two more hours wouldn't necessarily not be tedious.

Sleep Has Her House felt like a student trying to imitate the masters without bringing anything new to the table. Quite forgettable.

I also haven't been able to get through it yet. But the images, taken on their own as individual shots, are quite impressive to me. Especially as someone who also has shot a lot of footage on the iPhone 6. I've never been able to find a workflow that yielded anything close to those results which I find quite lovely... and keeps me interested in finishing the film some day.
