i watched a couple of italian anti-fascist pictures

La villeggiatura (marco leto) - about a history professor who won't sign an oath to mussolini and so is sent to exile on an island (the title is translated as 'black holidays'). soon he's allowed his own house and even brings his wife and daughter to live there. he's a respected man and the local capo cultivates him, until he stands up for other prisoners being brutalized. never trust a fascist

Il delitto Matteotti (florestano vancini) is an excellent backgrounder on mussolini's rise, relations with the church and suppression of his critics, culminating in murder of a rival who tries to draw attention to massive election fraud, such as proud boys brownshirts intimidating people from voting. gramsci is a character in this. 'that courageous little man,' as someone says. 'thank god the communist is gone,' someone else. mario adorf is excellent as mussolini

i didn't even realize that italy still had a king in this period who both appointed and could have removed mussolini but preferred to do nothing bc he feared the left

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giacomo_Matteotti

i find great relevance to our current climate of political threats and intimidation coming from one so-called party that wants to throw democracy aside by any means necessary :pirates: i might be done now, will make a list in a bit

Esoterica roundup, KJK-style

Armenian deep-cut: at first glance, it looked like a feature-length version of Healthy People For Fun. Also points toward a future with Kusturica in it.

Czech fairy tale

Sovietica, adaptation of Bulgakov:

some German thing:

There's also a 12-hour Soviet miniseries about WWII espionage called Seventeen Moments Of Spriung, if anyone wants such a thing. Seems to have a lofty reputation.
