John Ryan is the winner of this showdown. Mister Ryan may choose the next showdown if he wishes (directors or actors, both work).

I'm actually a bit ashamed that I gave All About Eve only 4.5 because it's one of Hollywood's greatest movies. My taste is gradually improving though, and I'll probably increase it someday. Also I might have been harsh giving Thank Your Lucky Stars only 1... it's messy and inept, but it does have a memorable turn by Bette Davis that everyone should see. She carries a musical number all by herself! Not a bad singing voice at all, though the song has a limited range.

I'm slightly abashed that my vote ended up going to Stanwyck. Not because she isn't great, just because I do like Bette so. It's those late films of hers that dropped my overall ratings, never much cared for what they had her do in her later roles.

Kind of ironic that my vote went to Bette, as Barb is one of my favorite actresses, and I've only seen 8 from Davis. I guess I've seen more clunkers from Barb, which brought her average down.

I almost had the same thing, but Babs won 3.04 to 2.96 I believe. But it shouldn't even be close! I ADORE so many Stanwyck movies. Bette Davis? Uh, The Petrified Forest is my favourite I guess, and I do really like it, but like... I would say there are five Stanwyck movies I like as much or more than that one (Remember the Night, The Lady Eve, Christmas in Connecticut, Shopworn, There's Always Tomorrow). However, I have 14 Stanwyck movies that I gave 2 or 2.5 out of 5. Other than General Yen and The Furies (and I suppose maybe Ladies They Talk About), they're all super-minor Stanwycks that I've only seen because I'm a completist. But it's hard to imagine a way to measure our ratings that ably takes this kind of phenomenon into account.

Have we done Greta Garbo vs. Marlene Dietrich? Two legends active in both silent and sound cinema.

We have not, but soon we shall. Garbo/Dietrich is on!
