the issue is that most of the classic bond films have long lulls and are somewhat overlong; i saw most of the classic bond films for the first time around those ages and remember thinking that they felt pretty stodgy even compared to other thrillers and action films from the 60s and 70s. the stodginess can be kind of pleasant but it is there even in the best movies (on her majesty's secret service is the most dynamically directed but it is a very atypical bond, and there is a lot of emphasis on the romance with diana rigg).

i might go with the spy who loved me, which has a cool villain (jaws), some amazing sets and effects work, and the relationship with the rival spy from russia actually means you don't get the leering seduction scenes from the other movies. but i'm not sure it would work any better or any less than the other consensus picks from the connery/moore era.

the brosnan movies probably fall into the uncanny valley where they are just old enough to seem dated. casino royale is a very competent action film from the age of nolan and bourne. quantum of solace feel the most like a bond movie, is the shortest, and has its vocal defenders, but marc forster really has no business on the set of a bond film.

yeah i was thinking quantum of solace is one where he doesn't seduce the lead female character, and the misogyny, while still there for bond, is more squarely on the bad guys. not the best bond movie overall, but short and pretty action-packed. the spy who loved me is a good choice too, for the reasons nrh mentions. i loved it as a kid, and i'm not sure how dated it will feel, but probably less than something like moonraker that has scenes in outer space.

Not that anyone cares, particularly, but I felt bad that I didn't tally the two polls I had open when I stopped using the forum, so here are the results of this one now that I'm hopefully back.

In total, fourteen people voted for twenty-five movies, here's the top 15, ties broken by number of ballots:
1. From Russia With Love (Terence Young, 1963) 56 pts
2. Goldfinger (Guy Hamilton, 1964) 54 pts
3. Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 2006) 49 pts
4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Peter R. Hunt, 1969) 45 pts
5. Skyfall (Sam Mendes, 2012) 32 pts
6. The Living Daylights (John Glen, 1987) 32 pts
7. Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965) 27 pts
8. Dr. No (Terence Young, 1962) 20 pts
9. You Only Live Twice (Lewis Gilbert, 1967) 18 pts
10. The Man with the Golden Gun (Guy Hamilton, 1974) 18 pts
11. Licence to Kill (John Glen, 1989) 17 pts
12. Live and Let Die (Guy Hamilton, 1973) 17 pts
13. The Spy Who Loved Me (Lewis Gilbert, 1977) 15 pts
14. Moonraker (Lewis Gilbert, 1979) 15 pts
15. Spectre (Sam Mendes, 2015) 13 pts

Only Bond films to not get any votes were Casino Royale 1954 (live TV version, only Bond film I've not seen), Never Say Never Again (dodgy Thunderball remake), and No Time to Die, the most recent one, which is interesting. I thought it was a mess in its third act but otherwise no worse than most Bond films. Other interesting thing is that GoldenEye didn't make this list, feel like it's one of the more popular Bond films overall. Less surprisingly, none of the other Brosnan films did, with Connery and Craig doing best followed by Lazenby, Dalton, and Moore.

welcome back! and you're reminding me that i should tally up the untabulated director polls, when the forum stopped working i put those on pause. thanks for posting the results, i haven't seen many bond films but i liked the stanwyck list!

Thanks for tallying this poll, MrCarmady!

I'm most surprised that a great film The Spy Who Loved Me is only ranked 13th. A lot of great monumental scenes and pristine production design by Ken Adam. And, in my opinion, the only good Roger Moore Bond film.

Also surprised that You Only Live Twice reached a high 9th spot. One of the lesser of Connery's tenure.

Thanks, flip! Haven't checked the forums in ages so didn't even realise they stopped working. Managed to watch more movies recently so gonna catch up with what I've missed. Definitely need to see more Stanwyck movies, only seen 8 and only 6 of the 20 that made the cut.

My pleasure, Silga! It's funny cos I feel like Gilbert basically remade the same film twice, The Spy Who Loved Me has many similarities with You Only Live Twice and then Moonraker is that but even more ridiculous and in space. Need to watch all of those again, it's been years and years.

Here, national television has been showing all Bond films, one every Friday, for a few months already. I re-watched both Dalton films and had a great time. Skipped Brosnan ones, but plan to re-watch all films with Daniel Craig starting this week.
