minor side note: occasionally (alternately) i am using also the username "Neon Ovalis" (cryptic writing of "Neo Novalis") here and there.

Pretty cool that the names of two users of this forum make reference to Lubitsch's Wild Cat :D ! (The other being rischka of course)

ofrene, you can pick our next director if you like!

but i'm going to take a few days off from polls, so i don't think i'll start the next one until tuesday or friday next week, and i'll probably not tally the currently-open polls until then either, so lots of time to decide

i'm sure lots of people have seen several dardennes films, but we'll need to make sure someone has seen 10+ (we always need one person to have seen at least ten, so we can be sure to get to a top ten in the poll). so if anyone has seen 10 or more dardenne brother films, please post here! if someone has, i'll start that poll on tuesday, and if no one has, i'll ask ofrene for an alternate suggestion on monday morning.

in this all-around (online & offline) dismay, i have good news!
yesterday, local "oscars" (i.e. "lions") have been awarded.
no need to mention laureates because the local commercial film industry is still enjoying itself in insignificance (no new new wave at sight).
HOWEVER, as a minor side note, one of the laureates mentioned being involved in April in mixing two!! new feature films by Jan Švankmajer.
"insect" (2018) not gonna be the last feature film entry in JŠ's oeuvre!

in the past, he was speaking about "insect" as his last feature film.
that he might still make some shorts but not anything long.
and now these rumors about two!! new long flicks.
no further details were provided so it might still turn into some mean joke.
we will see later this year.

That is really exciting, especially as Insect was one of his weaker films. Can't wait to see what he comes up with.

one title has been unveiled...
Jan Švankmajer‘s latest film Kunstkamera invites us to rejoice at discovering new things. The two-hour director’s cut will be presented at this year’s Ji.hlava IDFF in a world premiere. The film showcases an exceptional art collection created by the renowned surrealist, visual artist, filmmaker as well as writer, Jan Švankmajer, on his chateau in Horní Staňkov.

The historical experience says that each kunstkamera made until today was sold or stolen or destroyed after the death of its creator,” says Jan Švankmajer who is turning eighty this year. “For example, the collection by Rudolf II, and most recently the kunstkamera of André Breton. These are unique documents illustrating the level of imagination of people in the relevant period. Official museums can’t replace these collections because they lack the personal commitment. I have realized that my collection will undoubtedly meet the same fate and that’s why I decided to use at least the film medium to document the level of imagination of the contemporary people (remnants of the world of magic),” adds the director.

„Instead of merely creating a descriptive catalogue of artefacts,“ says producer Jaromír Kallista, “we decided to make a film with an added value of Švankmajer‘s imaginative view in the sequence of objects and interpretation, and not only the verbal one, of his kunstkamera. The film strives to spread the magical atmosphere of collections at the Staňkovský chateau. Following the Alchemical Furnace, Kunstkamera will logically top up our joint filmmaking production. There is nothing else to shoot at our age,” adds Jaromír Kallista.
