In the case of NEW YORK STORIES -- can we vote for individual sections of it? I'd vote for Scorsese's LIFE LESSONS, but Coppola's foul obscenity that I can't bring myself to type the name of makes it impossible for me to include the entire anthology.

Not my poll, but that's how it used to roll anyway. Individual sections in anthologies were fine. Life Lessons already got one vote, may as well add another if you want to.

Regarding the IMDb thing, maybe we should just switch to using Letterboxd since that's where everyone seems to have an account and the results get posted there , so it'd make sense I guess. We could still use IMDb for movies not listed on boxd just to have some base for years.

Life Lessons is a reason I included New York Stories. I didn't know if I can include it separately from the others. So I await the decision as well. And would change my ballot accordingly.

A third alternative for the people who want to vote for one segment of an anthology is to cast their vote for New York Stories: Life Lessons. That'll put the ball in my court at the end and force the decision onto me, if it turns out that there's any ambiguity in reading all the votes that were cast.

I agree with pabs that it would be dishonest to vote for a ten-segment film he's only seen two segments of, and urge him to consider whether votes he might cast for the two segments he's seen are likely to resonate with the ballots of other voters in a way that promotes those segments onto the final list. If he doesn't care about how his choices are represented on the final list, of course, that wouldn't be a factor.

The alternative to deciding for yourselves is to flog the issues through a period of discussion lengthy and extensive enough that people can reach a consensus of opinion on how to approach them. If that's what you want to do, fine... he said, huffily.

I was browsing UbuWeb today (which annoyingly isn't indexed by Google video searches), and stumbled on a couple of potentially interesting 89s: Surname Viet Given Name Nam (Trinh T. Minh-ha) and Me & Rubyfruit (Sadie Benning).

IMdb's year-listings have saved us some trouble!

I did some research and found out that the original 10 episode tv-series titled The Decalogue, and the expanded, cinematic versions of two of its episodes, A Short Film About Killing (an expanded version of Dekalog: Five) and A Short Film About Love (an expanded feature version of Dekalog: Six), are in fact three very distinct creations. To me that means it would be inaccurate if someone put The Dekalog (1989) in their list if they hadn't seen all 10 episodes of the tv series.

I'm happy to consider the entire tv series as one, standalone entity, and as a single entry in someone's list, as long as they have seen all 10 episodes. (It's listed as 1989-90 on IMdb, even though the entire series was first screened in Poland in 1988.)

A Short Film About Love and A Short Film About Killing are both listed as 1988 films on IMdb, so they're not eligible here.

Had all three been listed in the same IMdb year, I'd have had no objection seeing all three entries included on the same ballot, but as that isn't the case, we no longer have that problem!

Regardless, there are some of us here who don't like tv series included on the same list as feature films. I understand that argument too.

In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones - Pradip Krishen

TV movie, visually characterless, but it's a sweet and good-natured little hangout movie/time capsule. Grad-school hippies, 1974! Presented with none of the "we blew it" defeatism that colors most movies about that era; everyone's still idealistic and optimismy. Closest-in-tone western movie I can think of is Girlfriends.

^fwiw there's a pretty good version on youtube, no subs but i've heard that enough of the language is in english that it would be worth missing a few words not to suffer through that degraded vhs rip...
