Oh man I was lucky enough to re-watch Seven Samurai on the big screen last year, what a fucking film. It's one of these classics of world cinema the greatness of which seems like an axiom which belies both how funny and how tragic it is. The ending is just incredible.

March first watches that stuck in memory warmly

High and Dizzy (1920, USA) -- I hope they don't fall
Autumn Mists (1929, France) -- Haunting and beautiful impressionistic visualization of depression
Disque 957 (1929, France) -- Germaine Dulac reflects on the phonograph and thus on the coming of film sound
Battling Butler (1926, USA) -- All the troubles of your life melt away into 77 minutes of silent joy
Guilty Hands (1931, USA) -- Delish pre-Code with showy actors chewing its scenery
The Bridge (1957, Germany) -- Proto-Antonioni short, compelling stuff
The Humanoid (1979, Italy) -- Star Wars ripoff; cheap, ridiculous, & personally yours
Der Frosch mit der Maske (1959, Germany) -- The first Krimi, and my first seen; liked it a lot, my kind of genre
The Killer Shrews (1959, USA) -- Scientists create oversized mutant shrews (played by, uh, dogs) during a hurricane!
Illegal (1955, USA) -- Entertaining courtroom melodrama & moving HUAC-era vehicle for Edward G. Robinson
The Wings of Eagles (1957, USA) -- One of Ford's strangest movies, with a hysterical parody of Ford by Ward Bond!

Pleasing rewatches: The Wizard of Oz; The Giant Claw; Cabinet of Dr. Caligari; The Searchers

A.I. and Munich are my favorite Spielberg films, although it has been years since I've seen them, so I guess I'm due for a rewatch.

It's a pity you didn't like Bridge of Spies. I thought it was his best film since Munich.

Una Mujer Fantástica / A Fantastic Woman (2017, Sebastián Lelio)
O País de São Saruê (1971, Vladimir Carvalho)
Quartieri alti / In High Places (Mario Soldati)

5 great Martin Fric Comedies - also saw less great ones not included:
Roztomilý clovek / A Charming Man (1941, Martin Fric)
Zivot je pes / A Dog's Life (1933, Martin Fric)
Hotel Modrá hvezda / The Blue Star Hotel (1941, Martin Fric)
Pocestné paní Pardubické / The Respectable Ladies of Pardubice (1944, Martin Fric)

+ A trio of Haneke films:
Das Schloß / The Castle (1997, Michael Haneke)
Fraulein - Ein deutsches Melodram (1986, Michael Haneke)
Die Rebellion (1993, Michael Haneke)

Fun note:
Two in a Big City and The Clock are essentially the same film, just from two different sides of the war.

April first watches that stuck in memory warmly:

Kunįkága Remembers Red Banks, Kunįkága Remembers the Welcome Song (2014, Ho-Chunk) -- Beautiful
Syncopated City (1934, USA) -- Utopia envisioned by Warner Bros.'s musical short unit
There’s Always Tomorrow (1956, USA) -- Siiiiiirk!
Two Knights of Vaudeville (1915, USA) -- African-American fellas reject the vaudeville of white people
The Last Gangster (1937, USA) -- Entertaining gangster-prison yarn with Eddie G. & young spiffy Jimmy Stewart
Kreise (1933, Germany) -- Fischinger Goes Colour, my favourite of his I've seen
Surprise Boogie (1957, France) -- Joy-inducing hand-painting to jazz, like Norman McLaren only better
The Non-Stop Kid (1918, USA) -- Personally, I'd rather marry Professor M.T. Noodle
Curse of the Faceless Man (1958, USA) -- Feels like a creature feature directed by Michelangelo Antonioni!
The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse (1938, USA) -- Delightful WB entertainment with Eddie Gee as a doctor-criminal
Red River Range (1938, USA) -- Pleasant Republic B series western w/ John Wayne & dir. George Sherman
A Woman Is the Judge (1939, USA) -- Another top-drawer Nick Grinde about tenacious working-class women

No pleasing rewatches to report for this month.
