Merkel is a bit like Hillary Clinton. We're glad we don't have Trump. But that's about all there is to like about her. ;)

Elegy is surprisingly good short (watched Sinbad several years ago and didn't like it) and will make my list

watched so little for this poll and there are so many movies(almost 30+) to catch but unfortunately gonna be able to see 2 or 3 more, I think...

ok that was harrowing. it's very atmospheric. different mood than most gosho i've seen. full on melodrama of a young woman with the worst possible luck. the soundtrack is insistent and spooky. the power of superstition used to subjugate women is a tragedy for the ages and this is one of the more depressing films i've seen

and like eve she takes the fall. i can't vote for it. it's a prime example of the women's suffrage genre and even sally gave it 2.5 stars. it is quite compelling. i could not turn it off tho i often wanted to. gosho is one of my favorite japanese directors

Just for the hell of it, here's a little thing I found this morning. It's kinda charming.

El Bombero Esta Triste Y Llora/The Fireman Is Sad And He's Crying - Pablo Szir, Lita Stantic, Argentina 1965

Finishing up my 1965 viewing with three of the year's Beach Party-themed movies.

(1) Beach Blanket Bingo — Buster Keaton appears in this one, decked out in his get-up for The Railrodder. Somehow both lousy and endearing.
(2) Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine — Exactly what I'd always hoped it would be: Sixties time capsule delight, with perhaps Vincent Price's most Vincent Price-y performance. Serious question: is this a joke fantasy analogy for James H. Nicholson (Dr. Goldfoot) and Samuel Z. Arkoff (Igor) running American International Pictures as a bikini movie machine?
(3) The Beach Girls and the Monster — Cheapie mash-up of beach party movies and creature features, directed by and starring Jon Hall. Not recommended, though the creature design is endearing enough.

Very tough to choose just twenty, but I'm gonna cut some fine flickers that'll get plenty of votes anyway (Red Beard, The Saragossa Manuscript, A Blonde in Love, The Shop on Main Street, The Coward, Forest of the Hanged) to fit in a few excellent obscurities:

A Fugitive from the Past (Uchida Tomu)

With Beauty and Sorrow (Shinoda Masahiro)
Ilych's Gate aka I Am Twenty (Marlen Khutsiev)
The Fifth Horseman Is Fear (Zbynek Brynych)
The Brick and the Mirror (Ebrahim Golestan)
Intimate Lighting (Ivan Passer)
The First Teacher (Andrei Konchalovsky)
Three (Aleksandar Petrović)
Tokyo Olympiad (Ichikawa Kon)
Age of Illusions (István Szabó)
Time, Forward! (Sofiya Milkina, Mikhail Shvejtser)
White Mountains (Melis Ubukeyev)
Ordinary Fascism aka Triumph over Violence (Mikhail Romm)
Long Live the Republic! (Karel Kachyňa)
Torrid Noon (Zako Heskiya)
Before Tonight Is Over (Peter Solan)
Alpine Ballad (Boris Stepanov) (thanks for the subs, Mario!)
The Blizzard (Vladimir Basov)
The 317th Platoon (Pierre Schoendoerffer)
Days of Temptation (Branko Gapo)

I caught Suzuki's Born Under a Bad Star and most of Kei Kumai's The Japanese Archipeligo. The former is utterly bland and weak - well shot, but too many overtly childish jokes with little to make up for it. The latter is just ... essentially pathetic. Kumai's second film. His next The Sands of Kurobe is a decent, but bland big production. I suppose he was still far from finding his footing when he went to handle this awfully written US military focused story. Some decent visuals is its only saving grace.

Fort Graveyard
Guide -
Heitai yakuza / Hoodlum Soldier (1965, Yasuz Masumura)
The Hyperboloid Of Engineer Garin - Aleksandr Gintsburg

Kabe No Naka No Himegoto /Affairs Behind Walls - Wakamatsu

A lot of Not Reconciled went wrrrrrrt - straight over my head - but I'll read up about it in depth and have it explained to me in detail, and then I'll notice stuff I missed and realize how amazing it actually was (no doubt). :|

Ah, I got a spring for the thirsty from some ad in a magazine through the post in the days before downloading, one of the first 'beyond what the shops sell' movies I ever got. And was completely blown away with. Will always be fond of it.

Have that one lined up as well. Luckily/unluckily it just got subbed, so wouldn't have much of a chance. Better luck in 7-13 years I suppose. Let us know what you think all the same though. ;)
