SCFZ poll: Lloyd Bacon

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Lloyd Bacon

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Bacon films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Friday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: wba, greg x, ofrene, greennui, evelyn, bure, mesnalty, umbugbene, roscoe

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

Me too! If I get ahold of any unseen films by either of them that'll probably tip the scales, and I'll gladly re-propose them in a later round, if we make it that far.

One of my favorite comedies! Woody Allen's remake "Small Time Crooks" is great too.

Seen 17, don't really think much of Bacon one way or the other. His musical work was shared with Berkeley, who did the more interesting stuff in most of them, he made lot's of movies with Pat O'Brien, one of my least favorite stars of the era, and sort of skittered around on the fringes between A and B pictures a lot, not really establishing much of a presence in either but dependable enough and not actively bad at the job I guess, at least from what I've seen.

yeah, likewise, they all seemed like interesting choices (rollin too), but directors need some views or else a poll isn't really going to work. hopefully they'll work later on - it seems likely, since they were all close to meeting the thresholds.

So feel free to ditch this poll and start over with L'Herbier or Duras.

as i said above, duras and l'herbier weren't going to make for good polls because not enough people have seen a lot of their films. bacon is a much better choice.

and i'm off to montréal for three days tomorrow morning, and i'm thinking about leaving my laptop behind. i'll probably tally the carné poll before i go, but depending on when st gloede replies (and whether we'd need to check views), i might not start the new poll before friday. if st gloede nominates after i leave, can people check views if it seems we'd need to? and if anyone else wants to start up the next poll before friday, feel free, i'll still tabulate it!

Let's try to shine some light at two of the very best Hungarian directors: Zoltan Fabri or István Szabó

(I'll try Okamoto again next round).

If neither of the above make the cut what about Kachyna or Vlacil?

I don't have more than five for any of those directors except Okamoto, so no help from me I'm afraid.

we'd need to check views on those directors, so if anyone has 8+ for any director below, please post here:

zoltan fabri
istvan szabo
frantisek vlacil
karel kachyna

i can't help (2 vlacil, 1 kachyna, 1 szabo), but if karl is around, i think he might have seen a lot of szabo, so there's a chance. we tried vlacil recently and he didn't work, so it's unlikely he'll work now.

hopefully one of those names works, but if a day from now, it doesn't seem likely we'll get enough views for one of those four directors, can you nominate someone else and try again? i won't be back online until thursday night.

Yes, I'll try to think of a bigger name! (And hey, we can always try Okamoto too). Will go over the list of directors soon and get back to you.

I'm not sure if nominator counts, but:

Okamoto: 24
Fabri: 14
Kachyna: 13
Vlacil: 12
Szabo: 10

Apparently, we have still not done Milos Forman (nor Francis Ford Coppola ...), so that should be a fair bet if all else fails.

I've seen 8 Forman movies and 22 Coppolas, need a couple more people with enough Forman viewings, but I'm sure Coppola should work if nothing else.
