2011 poll

Post by Lencho of the Apes »

Choose your favorite films from 2011 (according to IMDb).

– Each person votes for up to 20 movies. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number, if you're enthusiastic about fewer than twenty.
– Do not rank the films except the number 1, it gets two points..

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible so that others may use them for recommendations. You may, of course, revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Ballots posted by people who do not participate in other parts of the forum will not be counted.

Deadline for 2011 lists will be Monday, June 3 at approximately 1 PM Pacific Time. June 1st falls on Saturday, and I imagine a number of people may use weekends as movie-watching leisure-time, so I've postponed it. If there's a public outcry, I'll change it back. The following year will be announced on Sat/May 1st.

I plan to watch as many of these as possible:

Alas, I am that predictable — but at least my personality has shone through already! :) I'll devote the month to reading and to lousy Raoul Walsh movies. Still I'll try to at least watch a couple unseen 2011 items (Hugo, Keyhole, maybe Story of Film, etc.) out of a firm sense of patriotic duty!

Remembering liking:
Margaret
Tree of Life
My Week with Marilyn (not great, but cute enough classic hollywoodiana)
Take This Waltz (or at least, it was different/interesting)
Jiro Dreams of Sushi (superficial but well-shot)

Fascinating and engaging but also deeply offensive:
Captain America: The First Avenger
Thor

And then lots of lousy stuff I can't recommend at all, most notably:
The Skin I Live In (deeply offensive and triggering representation of sexual violence and transsexual transition as an act of violence, what else is new, Almodóvar?)
Midnight in Paris (cultivation of artist worship by figure who uses his own artist worship as protection against repercussions for sexual violence)
Melancholia (celebration of depression as state of wisdom you shouldn't want to heal out of)
The Artist (incoherent faux classic hollywoodiana that mashes the Vertigo score with silent cinema, pardon?)
The Muppets (just not fun!)

Not a great year for me partly because what I've seen was whatever my local videostore had, which is the case for much of the 2000s, at least post 2007 or so. (It doesn't help matters that some of the more acclaimed movies they did have really aren't my kind of thing, so I've so far skipped them.) What's left are a decent amount of okay movies, and handful or so I liked a good bit, but nothing much that really grabbed me. A Dangerous Method being probably my favorite of the year so far. I'll have to try and look for some of the others from the year and maybe even break down and watch some of the ones I had purposefully skipped before.

J. Edgar (Clint Eastwood)

Small Roads (James Benning)
Twenty Cigarettes (James Benning)
Two Cabins (James Benning)
Un été brulant (Philippe Garrel)
Jardin du sel (Rose Lowder)
Junge Kiefern (Ute Durand)
Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (Johnnie To / Wai Ka-Fai)
The Terrorists (Thunska Pansittivorakul)
16mm (Daniel Steegman Mangrane)
The Adventures of Tintin (Steven Spielberg)
American Color (Joshua Bonnetta)
Un heritier (Jean-Marie Straub)
Schakale und Araber (Jean-Marie Straub)
The Three Musketeers (Paul W.S. Anderson)
Seeking the Monkey King (Ken Jacobs)

Curious about:
A Dangerous Method (David Cronenberg)
4:44 Last Day on Earth (Abel Ferrara)
Life Without Principle (Johnnie To)
The Moth Diaries (Mary Harron)
La Folie Almayer (Chantal Akerman)
Nana (Valérie Massadian)

I agree with those labelling 2011 as, by far, the most fire year of the 2010s. I don't think there's another decade past the 70s where I'd come so close to maxing out my ballot. Actually, if I hadn't gone with 1962, I would've picked 2011 for the Cup. I asterisked the five films I would've picked.

1. Oslo, August 31st (Jaochim Trier, 2011)
*Faust (Aleksandr Sokurov, 2011)
*I Wish (Hirokazu Kore-eda, 2011)
Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2011)
Shame (Steve McQueen, 2011)
*The Color Wheel (Alex Ross Perry, 2011)
Le Havre (Aki Kaurismäki, 2011)
The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick, 2011)
Hugo (Martin Scorsese, 2011)
Tomboy (Céline Sciamma, 2011)
*The Sun-Beaten Path (Sonthar Gyal, 2011)
*Sunflower Hour (Aaron Houston, 2011)
The Turin Horse (Béla Tarr, 2011)
The Day He Arrives (Hong Sang-soo, 2011)
Goodbye First Love (Mia Hansen-Løve, 2011)
Trash (Benoît Pilon, 2011)
We Need to Talk About Kevin (Lynne Ramsay, 2011)
Café de Flore (Jean-Marc Vallée, 2011)

Consider the fact that both Oslo, August 31 and Drive feature the song "Under Your Spell" by Desire. What a time to be alive and loving cinema.

1. Melancholia (von Trier)
2. The Turin Horse (Tarr)
3. The Day He Arrives (Hong)
4. Buenas noches, España (Martin)

After that a sharp drop-off. I might decide to squeeze in Le Havre though; it's not a masterpiece but I like its humanism.

Oh, Karl, you disappoint me. I was hoping for some venom-dripping hate-watches from you!
Come now, Lench, you can't really think I go around watching movies I'm sure I'm going to hate just so I can write a nasty review. Sounds like a bizarre way to get one's kicks. Nope, like most folk I watch movies I think I'm going to like, and there are still so many of those yet to see. Final list:

A Separation

The Kid with the Bike
The Deep Blue Sea
A Dangerous Method
The Day He Arrives
Carnage
A Simple Life
House of Tolerance
The Artist
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
The First Man (Gianni Amelio)

There are plenty of films from the year I hate too.
