the coppola/crash thing (at least according to coppola) was assumption on cronenberg's part -

it seems there were 9 people on the jury that year, plus coppola. i have a very distant recollection that the jury president doesn't get a vote (though they may have a lot of say in how others vote, in some years), so this is my speculation: roughly half the jury loved the film, and half hated it, and the first half really wanted to give it something and the second half really didn't, so they invented a special jury prize. i'm not sure i see a problem there -- i'd rather a film like that (that half a jury loves, i mean, not crash specifically) gets an award than one that everyone thinks is decent but not special.

i'd add that this is how our polls work. if half of scfz loves a film, and half hates it, that film is probably going to finish in the top ten in our annual poll.

Interesting how Coppola remembers it. Might be true, of course.

The story I wrote above was told to the audience before a screening of Crash this last March as I watched it for the first time at the festival during a special presentation.

Regardless of what happened, Crash is a really cool film, daring and different. Can't say I loved it, but I sure am happy to have finally watched it (and on a really big screen too - which helps for this film a lot).

When jury decided to present special award to Crash, Coppola even refused to present it to Cronenberg at the ceremony. :D

I wonder how they were around each other this year as they met again, this time both in competition. :D
Well, that's... :?
Hope Rasoulof wasn't hated against as much this year. ^^

The Cannes Competition starts May 13, so it's time for our always-thrilling Cannes Prediction Contest!

To participate, just pick the films you think will win the Palme d'Or, the Grand Jury Prize, the Jury Prize, and the Best Director Prize, and pick one Alternate film for potential extra points. Ballots must be in by the time Cannes starts on May 13 (in just under 2 weeks), so voters don't have the benefit of seeing Cannes film reviews before voting.

Make your selections from the competition films, which this year are:

The Phoenician Scheme • Wes Anderson
Eddington • Ari Aster
The Young Mother's Home • Dardenne Brothers
Alpha • Julia Ducournau
Renoir • Chie Hayakawa
The History of Sound • Oliver Hermanus
La Petite Derniere • Hafsia Herzi
Sirat • Oliver Laxe
Nouvelle Vague • Richard Linklater
Two Prosecutors • Sergei Loznitsa
Fuori • Mario Martone
The Secret Agent • Kleber Mendonca Filho
Dossier 137 • Dominik Moll
Un Simple Accident • Jafar Panahi
The Mastermind • Kelly Reichardt
Eagles of the Republic • Tarik Saleh
Sound of Falling • Mascha Schilinski
Romeria • Carla Simon
Sentimental Value • Joachim Trier
Resurrection • Bi Gan

Scoring - using a system that rewards picking multiple award winners correctly over picking one particular award correctly:

If your pick for the Palme or GJP wins one of the four awards: 5 points each
If your pick for the JP or Director award wins one of the four awards: 4 points each
If your Alternate pick wins one of the four awards: 3 points
If you pick the Palme correctly: 3 additional points
If you pick the GJP correctly: 2 additional points
If you pick the JP or Director correctly: 1 additional point each

If an award is given ex-aequo, I'll still award full points if you picked one of the two tied films.

Prize:
- glory! and the winner will have the option to decide on a poll we can run (that i'll tabulate), from one of our normal categories (director, established film genre, country/region)

Deadline: May 13

unless i get more info that makes me change my mind before cannes starts, i'll pick for the awards films by four directors who have never won anything in the main cannes competition before. that's probably not a good decision, but i'm doing it! kleber mendonca filho did win a jury prize once, so my alternate has at least won something before this year.

Palme d'Or: Sirat • Oliver Laxe
Grand Jury Prize: Romeria • Carla Simon
Jury Prize: Renoir • Chie Hayakawa
Director: Resurrection • Bi Gan
Alternate: The Secret Agent • Kleber Mendonca Filho

edited, may 10 -- (replaced Two Prosecutors/Sergei Loznitsa in the Director slot with Bi Gan's film)

and there was a very late addition to the competition, Resurrection by Bi Gan, so i've added that to the list of nominees, and now i have to work out how to change my ballot...

it looks like the first competition film will screen on wednesday may 14 (sergei loznitsa's two prosecutors) at 10:30 pm france time, so the deadline for our prediction contest will be around midnight (france time) the night of may 14. i hope someone will join me in the contest!
