2000 Poll 2.0

Post by greennui »

Pick your favourite movies of 1970 (according to IMDB), up to 20 films.

20-film ballots must be ranked as follows (with point totals assigned):
Five tiers 5-4-3-2-1
Four tiers 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5
Three tiers 5-3-1
Two tiers 4-2
One tier (aka unranked) 3

Ballot totals that aren't divisible by the number of tiers must be unranked. So 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19 film ballots are unranked.

I have so many films I love from both 1999 and 2001. Not so much from 2000.

Merci Pour Le Chocolat (Claude Chabrol)
The Captive (Chantal Akerman)
Werckmeister Harmonies (Bela Tarr)
Fidelity (Andrzej Zulawski)
The Gleaners and I (Agnes Varda)

Dr. T and the Women (Robert Altman)
State and Main (David Mamet)
O Brother Where Art Though (Coen Brothers)
Unbreakable (M. Night Shamalayan)
In Absentia (Quay Brothers)

Nostalgia tempts me to include High Fidelity, Requiem for a Dream , and American Psycho. But I'm honestly unsure how I feel about those films at this point and would need to re-watch them to make a firm decision one way or another. Though they were all three very influential on my teenage self.

I probably sniped it from your list, so thanks for that... and I certainly want to thank Sally for alerting me to Third World Hero, probably the best thing I've watched for this poll so far. I hope it won't weird her out if that'n ends up on my final list.

Meanwhile... does anyone have workable subtitles for Chunhyang? I've tried four or five different srt files, and all of them are 10 minutes + out of sync, too much to fix in vlc player. I'd hate to bail on it...

I quite liked SONG OF TIBET Xie Fei's last film to date, and THE CHILD AND THE SOLDIER (Reza Mirkarimi) - they'll both make the final list, I think - but don't know if they'll be up the alley of folks here. Although Jonathan Rosenbaum listed the latter in his 2000 Top Ten, and I know what a god JR is around here, so maybe someone'll like that.
