1967 Poll 2.0

Post by greennui »

Pick your favourite movies of 1967 (according to IMDB), up to 20 films.

20-film ballots must be ranked as follows (with point totals assigned):
Five tiers 5-4-3-2-1
Four tiers 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5
Three tiers 5-3-1
Two tiers 4-2
One tier (aka unranked) 3

Ballot totals that aren't divisible by the number of tiers must be unranked. So 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19 film ballots are unranked.

la soldadera (bolaños) cinematography by the great alex phillips. in the words of lencho - it's grim, kim (??) this scene recalled for me enamorada - very different context

a powerful neorealist look at women's roles in the mexican revolution. beware, they're often treated worse than dogs. a far cry from la cucaracha maria felix

meanwhile mexico has very likely elected a woman head of state today. ¡Viva México! :drinking: i could vote for this but i can't say i enjoyed it much :x

Yes, it's really deep and there's so much more to explore!!!
I personally believe that cinema peaked between 1967-1969 and it will never again get as good as that.

Hopefully not, but I can't see any signs of this period ever coming back.

I'd expand the range a little and say mid-60s to mid-70s, with a softer circle around it from the late 50s to the beginning of the 80s, but yes, this is really when cinema - or the kind of cinema I am into at least - was truly on fire. New waves around the world, creatives being given so much freedom - even in Hollywood.

There are obviously key countries that peaked later, China, Iran, etc. blowing up in the 80s, Romania in the 00s to present, and South Korea in the 90s/00s. Most of Africa, sans Egypt, also had a very slim output in the 60s. But this was a period where the freedom of cinema was felt so many places at once.

Interestingly, this is also my favourite period for music, and there specifically - 66-69/70.

It just feels to me like filmmakers all over the world were truly feeling a unique kind of creative freedom from 1967 to 1969: everything seemed possible. Like there would be a new kind of cinema in the future and this was just the beginning. Of course that never happened, but at least we have the great films from those years.

Apart from that I think cinema was in general most interesting during the silent period and I also adore the transition to sound from 1927 to 1933.

The end of the silent period is definitely comparable in a way, though with less (now available) films. A secret wish of mine would be to see an alternative reality where sound wouldn't be discovered/integrated for another, or at least a few more years. Those final 3 years of the 20s felt like it was close to seeing it's "medium" perfected and so many filmmakers were embracing a freedom of the moving camera. Then that was brought back into a box for a while due to sound stages and complications with audio.

which is sort of what happened in japan, where you get a number of quite interesting hybrid practices running simultaneously. it was very interesting during the recent shimizu series to see a late silent like japanese girls at the harbor and an early sound film like a woman crying in spring that were made the same year. and of course a whole host of movies where very limited soundtracks co-exist with intertitles and other silent techniques.
