watched the debut features (in some cases, they are only debatably their debuts) of john cassavetes, william friedkin, brian de palma, francis ford coppola, robert altman and oliver stone. if i had to guess which of those directors would go on to make the godfather, it would have been friedkin -- his debut good times was an anarchic pomo sonny+cher star vehicle, let down by the irritating presence of sonny bono and some jokes that would have been too cringey to make the final cut of airplane!, but it is precisely and ambitiously directed with a few remarkable scenes. besides cassavetes (don't think his film aged that well and it's a bit of a mess, but it's a singular film and remarkable in its own right in many ways), friedkin is the only of those six directors i would have been fairly certain would go on to a celebrated career, judging by their first features, though all but the coppola at least have something interesting about them.

always happy to see someone watching (and liking) the early nobuhiro yamashitas. the linda linda linda cult is deserved but i think he has one of the more interesting careers of the last two decades or so, and there is something very striking about those first few very low budget movies.
