btw., HONOR AND GLORY is gorgeous as well (without Barnumesque exaggeration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)!
it is truly charming to see the local impoverished nobleman, completely sunk in defeatism and indifference who at the end of the Thirty Years War (when the anti-Habsburg cause is definitely lost) collects all the residue of his stamina and rises against oppressors — the absurdity of such an untimely undertaking (starting to fight when the game is lost) is remarkable and i wholeheartedly recommend watching this charming period piece!
btw. the film was banned after the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion.

ignore what jiri says, he's an insane native with an over-cranked irony meter, unless you also find hard-to-be-a-god-level grime, and colossal post-invasion outrage charming. this is the angriest czech (and/or post-68) film i think i've seen for 69. hrušínský's last look to camera is total condemnation.

Born of a collaboration between Czech and French filmmakers, this feature film was severally affected by the dramatic changes in the political situation that occurred before and after the Warsaw Pact invasion of August 1968. The crushing of the Prague Spring political liberation meant Yves Ciampi’s film was barred from distribution to cinemas in Czechoslovakia. The protagonist of Těch několik dnů… (1968) is Frenchwoman Francoise, who experiences a love affair while studying sociology in Prague. Francoise had married shortly before she left for her studies, but she tries to break the bonds with her French partner. The love triangle, however, is affected by the political turmoil of 1968 and emotional alienation… The leading parts in the film – which offers an interesting insight into its contemporary era – are portrayed by Thalie Frugés and Vít Olmer.

synopsis
It is the last day of 1968. Young Parisienne Françoise toasts her reflection in a mirror. Sitting alone, she returns to Prague in her memories. As a student of sociology, she received a scholarship to work on her dissertation in East European countries. She arrived in Prague at the beginning of November 1967. On the very first day, she met young handsome Professor Pavel Kučera, who lectured in French literature at the Philosophical Faculty. From the first moment, the two people felt very close to each other and finally fell in love. However, just before her departure for Prague, Françoise had married Jean-Louis in France. She left to see him on Christmas to ask for a divorce. Although their marriage was not very serious, the husband does not want to give up his wife. When the young woman returns to Prague, her relationship begins to be influenced by the political activities of the Prague Spring, with Pavel being one of the main actors of the students' protests. Françoise, too, used to be a devoted activist of similar riots some time ago in Paris, but everything ended in disillusionment for her. Pavel does not have enough time for her and they gradually cease to understand each other. Jean-Louis eventually calls her and agrees to the divorce. Although Françoise still loves Pavel, she refuses to give up her newly acquired freedom. She leaves Prague in June 1968, aware that she would never return to him.

Wild indeed. I liked how the cat was on the periphery of so many of the sex scenes -- in one scene toward the end, somebody plugged in a vibrator and the zzzt noise made it jump.

I'm actually learning how to use to excel for work at the moment so these polls might be a good exercise

I used Excel when I did them—the hard part was inputting all of the movies and values and making sure that the titles weren't double-counted or I didn't miss anything. You'd get sometimes 200+ movie titles each needing an assigned value. Strained the eyes. Would take 2–3 hours of work, usually, hours I don't really have anymore. I wish there were a better/quicker way, but can't think of one.

i've done all the polls i've done by hand, i tried to use excel once but i think it slowed me down. i can explain how i do it if anyone cares, but i think i could do a year poll in 20-30 minutes if ballots were all formatted the way i want. scanning through this thread, though, it would take me 2-3 hours to do this poll, because i'd have to rewrite most of the ballots first.

ok my method is very primitive, it's a lot of copy/paste, i start out with a text doc that looks like this, but with more point totals:

and then i paste all the ballots at the bottom. then i take the first ballot, say it has four films, Film A, B, C and D in that order, and they get 4-3-2-1 points, i'd copy/paste each title under the right header:

then i'd move on to the next ballot, which is maybe Film C, D, E and F in that order. then unless i know where to find it in the list above, i'd go to the top of the document and apple-f to find "Film C", and move it up 4 points, find Film D and move it up 3 points, and add Films E and F to the 2 and 1 point lists, so the doc then looks like

and i just keep doing that until every ballot is added, then i just delete all the "5 pt" and "4 pt" text and i have the ranked list (i just need to type the ranking numbers in front of each title).

in practice, if i was doing a poll with actual titles, if i was adding Tokyo Story say, i wouldn't search for "Tokyo Story", i'd just search for any short fragment that is likely unique, so for "kyo" maybe, or "tok". it helps that i can type fast, the method would be pretty slow otherwise. and the most important thing for me is that ballots are all formatted identically. for one thing, i'm copy/pasting everything from people's ballots, so the way someone types the title is the way it shows up in my list. the list just looks like chaos if everyone types everything differently, like it could look like:

2. banshun/late spring -- 1953 -- ozu

and if a list of 100 films looks like that, it's barely readable. so when people don't follow the same format, i have to re-type their ballot. but the other thing is, because i'm searching for duplicate fragments of text to find films with multiple votes, i need people to use the most common title for a film (Late Spring, rather than Banshun, say), because otherwise i might search my doc for "banshun", not find it, and think the film only got one vote. and i need people to not use accented characters, because at least in my text program, if i search a document for "Andre", it won't find "André", so i can miss duplicates if some people use accents and others don't.

it definitely is not a fast method for the huge polls, but i doubt any method is (i tried doing one of the hot 100 polls with curtis using a spreadsheet, and for a poll that size it was maybe slightly faster, but it still took forever). but for the smaller polls, i was able to do this very quickly.

i'm learning python right now! chatgpt is surprisingly good at writing python code, and if it gave you any code, there are websites that will run code for you (i can give you a link if you need one). and maybe you could ask chatgpt to do things in steps, give it 3 ballots, ask for a tally, then ask it to add three more ballots to that tally. it might not be worth it for the year polls, but i'm tempted to try it if we do another huge poll, like our somewhat annual scfz top 100
