1906 poll
Choose your favorite films from 1906 (according to IMDb).
– Each person votes for up to 20 movies. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number, if you're enthusiastic about fewer than twenty.
– Do not rank the films except the number 1, it gets two points..
Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible so that others may use them for recommendations. You may, of course, revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.
Ballots posted by people who do not participate in other parts of the forum will not be counted.
Deadline for 1906 lists will be Monday, Apr. 1 at approximately 1 PM Pacific Time.

I've only got nine listed on Letterboxd so far, I'll have to dig up some of the others I've seen, which aren't many, and/or try and watch more.

No-one has mentioned the probably-maybe *first* feature-length narrative film, so I've gotta give it a name check at least.
The Story Of The Kelly Gang -- Charles Tait, Australia.
It only survives in fragmentary form, but most of the surviving frags are in a good state of preservation. Mr. Tait has at last a vague sense of how to pan with the camera to keep the action centered, and of when it's absolutely necessary to move in to a med. close-up, which he only does very sparingly... but the location shooting looks a treat, that's a real plus.

1. Une histoire roulante (Guy-Blaché)
— Les affiches en goguette (Méliès)
— From Leadville to Aspen: A Hold-Up in the Rockies (Marion, McCutcheon)
— Is Spiritualism a Fraud? (Martin)
— The ‘?’ Motorist (Booth)
— La peine du talion (Velle)
— A Trip Down Market St. before the Fire (Miles)
Lots of great, suggestive, resonant stuff. Early cinema remains, imo, the most underrated period in film history. Une histoire roulante is nothing profound but it always makes me laugh/smile, looks gorgeous on Blu-Ray now, and was directed by Alice, so my #1.

Is 60 mins the consensus for feature-length? In various places I've seen 40, 60, and 44 (I think i.e. a 4-realer) mins as the markerLencho_of_the_Apes wrote: ↑Sun Mar 31, 2019 2:58 pm No-one has mentioned the probably-maybe *first* feature-length narrative film, so I've gotta give it a name check at least.
