scripted by sartre, incoherent futility, don't get the love for this film
plus an egregious episode of cat crushing

after the war, nearly everyone was nuts
(and yes! i agree even the 1947 underwater divers in "silent landscapes" were behaving like pigs)
but this is the most demoralizing film of 1947
unfortunately, i can't unwatch it
evil all-inclusive:
pedophile cop, racist cop, boozing cop, violent cop
misogyny & uxoricide
hearing voices (of a religious bigot) & sororicide

getting in some practice for next como by watching something without subtitles, but it's a mythical tale directed by a silent film maestro so i think i got it. (prince meets beautiful girl, she rejects the dilettante until he learns a real trade, he chooses weaving, makes a fine carpet, they get married, some plotters kill his mother, he gets lured into their prison and spends his time weaving whilst wife is waiting at home learning sword-play, one day a salesmen brings a carpet which she recognises so off she goes to battle with the evil bitch princess in massive girl fight to save all the men.....oh it was just a dream....)
the sound technology is still cruel to the scenery so as a film it's a bit stulted, but it's also very fresco-ish....
plus, armenian extras are ripped

pour une nuit d'amour / passionnelle - edmond t. gréville
good old gréville...much better than those fucking revolting german films that are so full of saints it's a wonder anything bad happened in germany at all.
i'll leave it to zynab to sum up the film...

GOTHIC INCEL NOIR taking place in Victorian Provincial Gehenna—I think the most cruel, godless world I’ve seen in a dramatic feature of this era. Tradition and ritual reign supreme but belief among the initiates, even those to whom it should mean the most, is nil. High prices are paid for the purity of what one already knows to polluted. Sickly sweet waltz music coming from the ballroom, a glittering ribbon circling the pearly neck of Odette Joyeux, silk velvet draperies concealing a corpse lying on the bed, rococo engraving on a candelabra with a secret…it all signals a decadent eroticism that is impossible to take joy in. The film’s ending is also deeply unconventional for a studio product of the 40s; it teases a deus ex machina that never comes. I was shocked. The hopeless cynicism of it might be too much for even today’s audiences to take. Hollywood has never, and would never, make a Zola adaptation like this. It felt like film noir through the eyes of Georges Bataille.
pretty outlandish set up that recalls the invisible man
i rewatched dark passage. i think i'll add it to my list

i found an mgm musical to watch so there may be a last minute substitution
it's 'good news' directed by charles walters, a film with a few major problems starting with the leads. they can't sing
there are some splendid numbers as with most freed unit productions, the best/worst being 'pass that peace pipe' (hint: it hasn't aged well)
i can't add it to my list but it was fun to see a new-to-me mgm musical, a good mix of cringe and genuine laughs with a lot of great dancing
kind of perfect for this holiday weekend. i must say i'm curious about kismet after seeing it in lencho's letterboxd rotation

looooooooooooove it, THIS is how to deal with post-war moral chaos. even the potentially irritating god stuff that i got a bit worried about (looking snarkily at you bergman) is ambiguous cuz at the end the (surprisingly cute, given that he's an idiot) hero is cheerfully like 'yes but whatever, nonsense, smoooooooch'....
and karin nellemose plays the coolest female character i've seen in ages, total idol...
we're all just zeros, like the surprisingly modern apartments that house us
definitely not filmed in hollywood
1947 denmark paging 21st century usa

I have a new rule, which I'm happy with: I can only vote for movies I've seen since I started keeping a diary of my viewings in Excel, which was July 2021. Unfortunately, that means my ballot here is sparse indeed. I'm planning to fill this out in viewing over the next two months (though obviously that won't count towards the poll).
