1958 poll

Post by Lencho of the Apes »

Choose your favorite films from 1958 (according to IMDb).

– Each person votes for up to 20 movies. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number, if you're enthusiastic about fewer than twenty.
– Do not rank the films except the number 1, it gets two points..

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible so that others may use them for recommendations. You may, of course, revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Ballots posted by people who do not participate in other parts of the forum will not be counted.

Deadline for 1958 lists will be Monday, April 22 at approximately 1 PM Pacific Time.

Chalti Ka Naam Gadir - Satyen Bose no subs?
there are a few copies on youtube with subs and it's on prime, very fun movie with some great songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoIXo60itPY

it's nowhere near as good as madhumati but bimal roy's yahudi is really interesting if you're into that kind of thing. howrah bridge isn't great but it's fun and a good example of a hindi thriller film from that period. not a big year for films of auteur interest, the ghatak and the rays are definitely the films to see.

it's the least known and least touted of his films, but ghatak's bari theke paliye from this year is worth a look. (his debut nagarik from '52 might be the other, though even that, as uneven and inchoate as it is, is in retrospect regarded as important for historical/auteurist reasons.) the runaway kid's first encounter with the big city alone is one of the most arresting sequences of his career, though perhaps the film suffers a bit later as ghatak (not entirely uncharacteristically) gets too caught up in the romance of the mythical return to country. nevertheless...

(on another note, chalti ka naam gaadi a key film from my childhood.)

'58, if nothing else, is an incredibly dense year for classic film, so many films are almost baroque, sometimes in texture, sometimes emotion or story or all of those things, as they try to mine established genres and themes for something new, shortly before things would radically change for film in the sixties with a whole new crop of filmmakers and methods taking over. A sort of a great last gasp, in a sense, for a certain kind of filmmaking with so many movies really striving for something different though still working in more established modes.

There are a lot of movies contending for my list, too many to name at the moment, and I'm pleased and somewhat amused to see that pretty much every movie that looks interesting from the year listed on Letterboxd already has been watched by at least someone else I follow, which is mostly people here, which seems to make it one of the most heavily explored years for movies I've come across as well. Still a somewhat limited output but wider accessibility and many film industries working at higher capacity with quality artists and craft makes it maybe one of the most comprehensible years for movies, even as I'm sure some films still fall through the cracks.

Speaking of which, here's one I'm interested in seeing, cause it looks pretty snazzy, Swedish thriller Mannequin in Red

it looks like there's a copy of ajantrik on tube that's 1hr 36min 50sex. does that runtime sound accurate or would i be wasting an hour and a half of my life on an incomplete film?

Firefly Light (Gosho)
Ajantrik
Two Fedors (Khutsiev - RIP)
