A Medal For Benny - Irving Pichel, 1945

I never knew I wanted to see Arturo de Cordova and Frank McHugh play a scene together, but duh.

But omfg it's so embarrassing. The whole movie... Tizoc levels of condescending racist cringe. I'm trying to love it semi-ironically, but it may be just... too... much.
The opposite of 'reify' is... ?

watched two hasse ekman films

wandering with the moon (1945) and the white cat (1950) -- this was in greennui's DtC list and it's very mysterious!

Image

i think i have one more - the girl in the third row? or something like that. i like his style 8-)

edit: not as kinky as the white cat but a lot more sentimental

Third Row is very Capra. Prefer his more kinky films like Banketten, though Miss Chic is very good fluff.

i'm scared to watch more ekman (of course will get to the white cat) cuz he doesn't act in that does he? banketten was hot due to combination of acting/directing. is he a bad boy in any other films (apart from while the door was locked, seen that)

Jack of Hearts. There's so many that I haven't seen yet though and he generally tends to play unsympathetic characters in his film.

the funny thing is that it isn't really an adaptation at all - the japanese publisher paid to translate the entire comics series for the french crew but apparently they never read it, and just based it on the basic pitch...

the comic is a genuine classic though, part of a big wave of work by women writer/artists in the '70s. i haven't seen all of the tv series but it is considered a classic in its own right, the comics were a big enough hit that a lot of really talented people (esp. osamu dezaki) ended up working on it.

I watched parts 1 and 2 of Kobayashi's The Human Condition, "No Greater Love" and "The Road to Eternity".

Really amazing photography and a heart-wrenching story. It's a great anti-war, anti-military film, and it dares speak out about Japan's merciless violence during its empire building days in Asia. Mistreatment of lower-ranking men by brutal officers in the Japanese army is also highlighted.

The cinematography is just divine.

Looking forward to part 3.

Incredible films, you should definitely look forward to part 3, many think it's the best.

My preference is 1, 3, 2.

I always wondered if Part 2 served as an inspiration for Full Metal Jacket.

I really, really thought this was a wonderful trilogy. Finished it a few hours ago. I guess I'm really odd, because my preference is 2, 3, 1.

But as a single entity, it's gets a perfect score from me.

dust of angels (1992) an elegiac sort of gangster film that foreshadows hou's goodbye south goodbye (1996) but so much bloodier. the lead actor died within the year at 18 in a traffic accident, botching the planned sequel. the only film i've seen by director hsu hsiao-ming but it's a beauty

seems like i watched the wrong japanese 'comedy' for 1983 and missed out on P.P. Rider which appeared in ofrene's list. conveniently fits halfway between 'dangerous encounters of the first kind' (1980) and 'bound for the fields, the mountains and the seacoast' (1986)

casta diva - eric de kuyper (1982)

how come all these streaming sites won't let me grab screencaps anymore? have to scrape the internet...anyway this is 100 minutes of staring at men doing mundane not-muchness. great. (why we gotta rely on gay men for this stuff, where's all the woman leering at men movies?)

no dialogue, interspersed with mainly opera, but the credits rather grandly attribute inspiration for the film to: emile poppe, c akerman, k anger ♥, w bockmayer, r barthes, r bresson, s dwoskin, j genet, g hoyningen-huene, h van manen, b mangolte, d michals, l visconti, a warhol, w schroeter, h kümel, and j von sternberg.

that's some inspiration

Image

also watched:

the mazovia - tadeusz makarczyński (1951)

which is pure communist folk-porn nightmare fuel

Closed out the Nitrate Film Festival with the "Blind Date with Nitrate" where you don't get to find out which film you're seeing until it starts playing. Turned out to be The Third Man which I've often heard archivists cite as one of the prime examples of an idea film to see on Nitrate.
They cobbled to film together from 2 separate prints. The final two reels were in bad condition, but certainly watchable.

But afterwards, they projected one of the same scenes from the poor condition print, but on safety film for comparison. It was a trade off. Better condition print, but definitely an image that looked reminiscent to early DVDs of classic films: flattened image, highlights seemingly blown out, etc. So it was cool to get the comparison of the physical media.

I've seen the movie probably close to a dozen times now, but never on film or in the theater before. This time I found that the whole final chase scene wasn't really exciting at all. Just incredibly sad. Everyone wants to talk about the cinematography of that sequence, but this time, it sort of meant a lot less to me than just the gloom of a man hunting his own friend, who is trapped like a rat, and has no hope for escape any point throughout the chase sequence.

Nice that the film can still make me feel different things after all these screening over many years.

i watched the reality winner hbo doc - the first whistleblower prosecuted by trump's justice dept for the crime of revealing that russia had access to election data. she shared one document with the intercept who quickly outed her and she was sentenced to 5 years in prison. i would have done this too after being forced to listen to fox news all day at work. anyway the big boss man's got some explaining to do if he expects to stay out of prison (not holding my breath etc).

the script is entirely a transcript of her arrest and interrogation and it's pretty effective

http://www.ryanlouiscooper.com/2020/09/ ... rcept.html

she is on supervised release now
