Chess
I have chess fever. So if anyone else is taken with the game, here's a place to discuss it.
The world chess championship is on right now – Magnus Carlsen vs. Ian Nepomniachtchi. Thus far, we have 5 games, 5 draws, but there have been glimmers of possible breakthroughs for both players.

nepo is p much the only contemporary that carlsen hasn't been overall better than in their head-to-head history
if nepo wins it will be before the tiebreakers. he would get smashed in rapid/blitz. so he's gotta take more chances. i wonder to what extent carlsen is playing it safe

Yes, I'm surprised that Nepo isn't playing more to win, especially in this morning's match where it seemed like he had a chance around move 30 if only he pressed more for victory. Hopeful that we see a win soon, though I confess I still quite enjoy draws.Curtis, baby wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 9:44 pm if nepo wins it will be before the tiebreakers. he would get smashed in rapid/blitz. so he's gotta take more chances. i wonder to what extent carlsen is playing it safe

And what a win! Carlsen just won a 136-move thriller – the longest game in Championship history – and with it has skyrocketed his chances for winning a fifth title. I won't be able to watch the full games for the next week or so, but I'm glad I made time for this one – as good as it gets.

Yes, I don't see Ian making a comeback. At least we'll get a champ victory via classical chess.

Oh, that's very cool!
oh yeah - in the 1966 soviet crime caper comedy BEWARE THE CAR there was this interaction
there was no reason to be, but i was kinda taken by the specificity of this throwaway moment. just like, wow, these mfs really just followed chess back then back there

Bit harsh, if Nepo wins he'll be 2800 or within touching distance, Khalifman peaked at 2700. It is weird to have the obviously best player in the world be more interested in drunk streams and poker but to have the clear #2 (how many people have won back-to-back candidates?) as the champ wouldn't be bad.Curtis, baby wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2023 10:44 pm nepo poised to be second alltime behind only alexander freaking khalifman on the list of laughably meaningless world champ titles

I haven't had time to actually watch the broadcasts ( ) but this seems like one of the most entertaining WCCs ever. If this is just battling to be the world's No. 2, I'll take it over no-suspense failures to dethrone Carlsen.

Haven't followed it closely. Feel bad for Ian, but happy for Ding. That said, would be interested to know if people feel that Ding won the WCC or more that Ian lost it?
