Re: Best of 2022 Poll!

Post by flip »

a few notes:

• 86 different films got a vote. last year the number was 100, which meant i could post a top 100 list to letterboxd. i might want to do that again, so i might be asking for two or three nominations from each voter to add to the end of the list, but i'll post about that in a day or two

• as always, ties were broken by letterboxd views (fewer views = higher ranking), though there was only one tie in the top ten, lots of ties later on

• this year's palme d'or winner was, per scfz, the best film of the year
• this year's golden lion winner was, per scfz, not among the best films of the year
• this year's golden bear winner was, per scfz, the 58th best film of the year
• this year's golden globe for best drama winner was, per scfz, the 7th best film of the year, and their best comedy/musical was 9th
• this year's likely academy award best picture winner was, per scfz, the 12th best film of the year (i'll edit this if everything everywhere doesn't win)

so i think the big award winners did better in our poll this year than they usually do

• and in case anyone interested didn't notice, the results of the "SCFZ Does the Oscars" poll have also been posted

Thanks for hosting this poll as usual, Flip!

Plenty of films from the final list will be available at my local film festival which starts this week.

From the Top 10 I plan to see The Novelists' Film, Tar, Aftersun and Trenque Lauquen during the festival.

Thanks for hosting, Flip!

Really excited to see Unrueh climb to the second spot, and a really interesting top 10 for sure!

Not seen The Novelists' Film - it has not been priority as I'm yet to be impressed by Hong, but this makes me more curious.

thanks for noticing! i accidentally didn't combine all the votes for Tar, which actually changes the top five -- Tar finishes in 2nd place in the poll, and we have votes for only 85 films, not 86

so i would like to make this a top 100 list, but to do that, we'll need some more votes. so i'm asking anyone who has seen other worthwhile films from this year to post an additional ballot, and from those ballots i'll pick the films that will finish in the 86-100 slots. if you can help, this is how it will work:

- post a list, ranked, of up to five films from 2022 that you thought were good but which didn't make our top 85
- i'll pick the top film from each ballot, and those will be the 86th, 87th, etc, films, and then if i don't get to 100, i'll take the second film from each ballot, and so on
- to break ties, i'll give highest priority to ballots from voters who didn't participate in the original poll (since the films they vote for would have been in the top 85 had the ballot come in earlier), then i'll break ties as usual, using letterboxd views (fewer views = higher ranking)

and if i don't get a ballot from ofrene, who posted a first draft and a final ballot in this thread, i'll assume the one film (the herzog) on the first draft that fell out in the update is their first choice

deadline: friday march 24, noon ET

Same boat as you in terms of choices, though I did enjoy these three more than Living or See How They Run so why not:

Funny Pages (Owen Kline)
Bullet Train (David Leitch)
Glass Onion (Rian Johnson)

thanks for all the extra votes! because therouxxx missed the regular run of balloting, i'll elevate one of his choices on my extra ballot so at least he'll get one extra film in the top 100. and a reminder that i'll be finalizing the list tomorrow, so if anyone else wanted to suggest some films, you have about 20 hours to post here!
