2022 Academy Awards Poll!

Post by flip »

The Academy Award nominations have just been announced. For our never-very-popular annual Academy Awards poll, using the official nominations, you can vote in any category you like. The rules:

- if you have not seen at least half of the nominees in a category, you can't vote in that category, except in the Best Picture category
- for Best Pic, if you have seen 3, you can post a top one, if you have seen 4-5 films, you can post a top two, if you have seen 6-7 films, you can post a top three, if you have seen 8-9, you can post a top four, and if you have seen all 10 you can post a top five. If you haven't seen 3, you cannot vote
- for the other categories, you can post a top two list if you have seen 3-4 films, or a top three if you have seen every nominee
- ballots must be ranked, and will be scored in the usual way (1-2-3-etc from the bottom up)
- for any category that garners two or more ballots, I'll tally the results and we'll award the SCFZ alternative Oscars accordingly

nominees can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/95th_Academy_Awards

I've got a fair number that I've seen only 1 or two nominees. I'll try to get in a couple more films so I can actually cast a vote on those.
Adapted screenplay goes to Glass Onion despite that screenplay being dumb... because Women Talking is an actively terrible script. You can see great actors trying their best, and still huge swaths of the film feel like a community theater production because even some of the most talented working actresses can't really do much with what they're given there.

Other than that category, I feel like I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of films nominated this year. Tar and Triangle of Sadness were both films that I liked immensely. Even Banshees I found worthwhile, if uneven.

just a reminder that the deadline for this poll is fast approaching! so that i can post the results before the academy awards on sunday, i'll make the official deadline 6pm EDT tomorrow, saturday march 11, but if any ballots are posted within a few hours of that, i'll probably be able to count them. if you need to update a ballot already posted, please do that soon!

think i've only seen 3 movies nominated for anything this year (batman, all that breathes and rrr). can't remember if that's less than the last few years but it really does feel like a year where i have no interest in watching pretty much anything else...

some odd choices from washington post critics who agree that top gun: maverick is the actual best picture this year
Like the original Top Gun but if it was good
- someone on letterboxd. i kind of want to watch it?

edit: ok they aren't actual movie critics just random journalists :|

i was just about to post that! one of them is the wapo style editor, the other wrote some book about nuclear weapons. it becomes pretty obvious they don't deserve any attention when the only international film they think deserves a mention when going over fifty years of bad oscar nominees is parasite. it's not like they confined their choices to the actual nominees a lot of the time.

the whole exercise is steeped in a kind of arrogance i find intolerable, from the patronizing tone of the writing to the whole idea that reading their random film opinions is worth anyone else's time. but it made me think scfz could do a much better job. :)

i watched the trailer for avatar and was wondering why it wasn't nominated for best animated feature :D

it's the only best pic nominee i haven't been able to see, would need to go to theater i guess, thought well enough of the first one

i mostly hated the first avatar and loved the second one. most of the middle section is a walsh type neighborhood movie, or at least as close as we're going to get to one in a modern hollywood movie. but not sure how it would play without movie theater 3d. i think it's the best use of that technology since shankar's 2.0.

i have tabulated the results so far. we could definitely use more ballots (or longer ballots), so:

• i'll accept new ballots up until the time i post the results, which will be in the mid-afternoon (EDT)
• if you want to update an already-posted ballot, please make a new post, quote the entirety of your old ballot, and then post your new ballot underneath, so i can see how your votes changed (otherwise it's really hard for me to update the tally)

thanks!

posting the results, first for the technical awards -- when i could, i broke ties by looking only at ballots from voters who had seen both of the tied films, and chose the film that did better on just those ballots

On points, Triangle of Sadness and All Quiet on the Western Front ended up tied for Best Picture, but Triangle won the tiebreaker. Tied for 3rd place were The Fabelmans and The Banshees of Inisherin, with Tar in 5th, and nothing else registering more than one point.

Three different films won three awards in our poll, and none won more than three. Perhaps interesting -- none of our triple winners were even nominated for Best Picture. They were The Batman, The Whale and Babylon.

rrr winning best song is kind of funny, since every year hollywood scrapes the bottom of the barrel of mediocre songs that play over end credits as an afterthought while india is putting out dozens of original film songs per week.

also think that end credits songs shouldn't count, but that's a whole different argument.
