Katariina Lillqvist is a Finnish director and screenwriter, who has for a long time been living and working in the Czech Republic. The local animation has enchanted her to the point that she decided to study and, in the end, even partially move to the Czech Republic.

A deeply touching surreal tale of people distressed by war. The narrative spiced with grotesque details, and the hypnotically oppressive atmosphere are as in a nightmare, but images of real European terrors are lurking in the background.

a short film based on dance. The main characters are two young Sámi ballet students; Birit and Katja Haarla. The movie tells a bit melancholic story through their dance performances. At the same time it examines the deeper questions of the ownership of Sámi land.

“Taiga” is an elegy to boreal forest. In south Finland taiga is already started to change to temperate forest.
This tactile film is made on 16mm film without camera. It combines hand scratched animation with real tiny plants and moss collected in subarctic region in Finland.

HANASAARI A (Hannes Vartiainen, Pekka Veikkolainen, 2009) #CoMoFinland

Hanasaari A is an experimental documentary about the changing cityscape of Helsinki and the final moments of a coal-fired power plant. The old industrial milieu is being destroyed to make space for modern housing units. The film is a combination of animation, live action cinematography, and graphic elements. It is based on 500 000 photographs taken during the final two years of the existence of the power plant.

Kissatone Virne/Catless Grin - Jasper Late, 2017.

Amazing what this guy could do with a couple of IPhones and a couple hundred Euros. That's not much of a recommendation, but the same movie with a budget of hundreds of thousands wouldn't necessarily be any better. And I was only the 2nd person on LB to log this, which always tickles me...

Also I really liked the way he coded glitches into his visual field to represent the central character's mental/emotional breakdown.

On youtube, along with Etsinassa/Searching For You which is an okay college-student romcom that avoids all the fumbly clumsiness of mumblecore while not doing anything particularly different from that. Four views on LB, now five.
