Better put in a list now so I don't miss out like I have been doing since I'm still a bit distracted.

Angels and Insects
Nostalgia for the Countryside
Safe
Strange Days

Guimba the Tyrant
On the Beat
Fallen Angels
Ulysses’ Gaze

Maborosi
Wild Side
Zero Kelvin
Cyclo

The Blade
Kristin Lavransdatter
Welcome to the Dollhouse
A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella

Funny Bones
The Addiction
The Stairway to the Distant Past
The Passion of Darkly Noon

From what I've seen, it was a year more interesting than exciting, a lot of experimenting around the edges over what might be done with movies, not entirely successful for the most part, but better than sticking to formula. It was a pleasant year but I didn't see much top flight stuff.

Mortal Kombat - Paul W S Anderson
Visually intense, tonnes of CGI. Plays like a Tsui Hark movie, only it's really really stupid.

Another one that''s under the radar: Rough Magic - Clare Peploe, UK. British movies that try a Mexican setting get it pret-ty weird, but this one also gets USA-1950s 'wrong,' so it's just other-worldly and fantastical instead of offensive. Not canon-worthy, but rather fun; with the main comic strategy being "let's pretend this is a film noir" and the two leads seeming to channel Veronica Lake/Lauren Bacall and Idon'tknowDickPowellmaybe, it feels like a very Evelyn movie.

Added to youknow, if necessary -- I'll go look.

Lencho of the Apes wrote: Tue Aug 02, 2022 9:58 pm I just want to pop in and recommend Special Effects by Larry Cohen to WBA, the strongest recommendation I'm able to give him. The most WBA movie I've seen since Tintorera and Rape Apartments. Recommended to everyone else as well, but some people would want to cancel it. When the Vertigo parody kicked in, after about an hour... words failed me.
Thanks, I'll put it on my watchlist! :cowboy:
