i know some people have no jane russell tolerance but i like her. i just wonder if that off the shoulder blouse was in her contract, it's practically all she gets to wear

Who doesn't like Jane Russell? I mean, sure, she's sometimes misused, but when the role's a fit for her, she's aces.

Very interesting top picks, wba. Do you know if Die Deutschmeister, Ein Herz voll Musik or Alibi are out with English subtitles anywhere?

^^ I love German(-language) cinema, and Ernst Marischka and Robert Adolf Stemmle are two of my all-time favorite filmmakers.
Unfortunately 90% of German cinema isn't available with "foreign language"-subtitles, as far as I know - I'm afraid I can't help you there. :-(

Well, I've watched Women's Prison (Ida Lupino, butch lesbian sadist warden) and Jungle Moon Men (Johnny Weissmuller vs. supernatural 'moon' (?) goddess) for the poll so far. Glad I got these unseen vaulted critics' favourites out of the way first, so that now I can focus on diving into the mindless trash I haven't seen (Pather Panchali, French Cancan) Gotta keep my priorities straight.

kawashima's tales of ginza is an interesting attempt to blend a sort of documentary about japan's post war culture with drama, romantic comedy and film noir elements. the structure is a bit difficult to follow but maybe on rewatch it will conquer me.

for a moment, i thought Glynis might be possessed (due to the way she is wildly rolling her eyes in one scene).
but when i played the scene in stop-motion it became clear she is not displaying a white-eyed possessed look (her eye iris is continuously perceptible and she is just making a silly eye twist before taking a look on the right).
Image

thus i abandoned my initial suspicion that this elder guy ↓ is actually an exorcist — and all that is framed as Glynis's "birthday party" is really Glynis's exorcism session.
Image

in any case, only those individuals who are perceived as possessed (or in a pact with the devil) are usually made to wear silly hats (by other (respectable) members of society).

Finally watching Ulmer's Naked Dawn for the first time. I kept waiting for Arthur Kennedy to show up, and then, now 12 minutes in, I finally realized... oh, that's Arthur Kennedy with a lot of makeup and hair dye  Not doing much for me yet, but we'll see!

springtime frost - armands, leimanis

it's really difficult to watch fiction features at the minute (i guess i'd be going thru one of my dry movie spells if it wasn't for all the other non-fiction footage around) so this 80 mins took about 3 hours. nevertheless totally rooting for the mad bitch. she loves a man so hard & long that she murders her own child for him, and he prefers the so-good-&-innocent-she's-virtually-retarded virgin? he might as well have married a sack of potatoes. men are so weird.
