yay silga! you survived covid!

i still have a few left to watch - found some more longish travelogues, including two canadian films, one with sound!

just watched the 49 min 'visit to hunan' - dir. unnamed colonial missionary, which was unremarkable apart from these two hardcore tiddlers, BOTH of which were smoking cigarettes

I'd been playing to watch 20 movies for the poll... oh well. If all goes well, I'll be done my work for the semester this evening, which means I'll have the 29th and 30th to binge watch some '46s. Will be sure to report back with some musings on vintage trash!

joyous (thank god) conclusion to the rubble films

bambini in città - luigi comencini

watched without subs, and not a fan of wee ones, especially labouring under artily contrived metaphors of resurgence, but after the gruelling journey these kinds of films have been on, it's a balm to see these children emerging into the light to play!

exercise musk-ox - 57 mins, b&w with sound, music, narration, professionally shot & produced by national film board
canadian army and air force exercise "musk-ox" - 78 mins, colour, silent, amateur footage shot by lt. col. nac croft

my last two watches for 1946! and an interesting study in film technique since they were both filming exactly the same events....the professional one is snow-beautiful, coherent, but also jingoistic, racist, distancing both in its colonial portrayals and in the narration, which situates it as a past event and makes it seem something that happened so long ago. whereas the amateur colour footage is messy, inchoate, oneiric, and impersonal - there's no 'white man' distinction and everyone just mingles in almost faceless incomprehensible events and actions that could still be happening even now....♥♥♥

and now i guess i have to go and put together a final ballot - how on earth am i going to tie up all this watching i've done?

Suspense (Frank Tuttle) -- Delirious figure-skating musical B noir directed by then-Communist Frank Tuttle. My favourite find of my (admittedly limited) 1946 viewing.
