SCFZ 2021 Academy Awards Poll

Post by flip »

The Academy Award nominations have been announced. For our never-very-popular annual Academy Awards poll, using the official nominations, you can vote in any category you like. The rules:

- if you have not seen at least half of the nominees in a category, you can't vote in that category, except in the Best Picture category
- for Best Pic, if you have seen 3, you can post a top one, if you have seen 4-5 films, you can post a top two, if you have seen 6-7 films, you can post a top three, if you have seen 8-9, you can post a top four, and if you have seen all 10 you can post a top five. If you haven't seen 3, you cannot vote
- for the other categories, you can post a top two list if you have seen 3-4 films, or a top three if you have seen every nominee
- ballots must be ranked, and will be scored in the usual way (1-2-3-etc from the bottom up)
- for any category that garners two or more ballots, I'll tally the results and we'll award the SCFZ alternative Oscars accordingly

nominees can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/94th_Academy_Awards

Best Picture

LICORICE PIZZA, I guess, the best of the ones I've seen.

Best Director

P.T. Anderson

Best Actor

The ones I've seen are entirely undeserving. Toss it to whomever.

Best Actress

The one I've seen is entirely undeserving. Whatever.

Best Supporting Actor

Jesse Plemons

Best Supporting Actress

Kirsten Dunst

Best Original Screenplay

LICORICE PIZZA

Best Adapted Screenplay

I've actively despised the ones I've seen -- I'll never forgive or forget the moment in DUNE when poor Josh Brolin has to say "I am smiling." And that DOG thing, fuck no way.

Best Animated Feature (seen zero)

Best International Feature (seen zero)

Best Documentary Feature (seen zero)

Best Documentary Short (seen zero)

Best Live Action Short (seen zero)

Best Animated Short (seen zero)

Best Production Design

No nomination for LICORICE PIZZA, no peace.

Best Cinematography

Nothing special about any of the ones I've seen, least of all the video-gamization of MACBETH.

Best Costume Design

Again, no LICORICE PIZZA, no peace.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Again, no LICORICE PIZZA, no peace, for managing the remarkable feat of getting those hairstyles right without going overboard.

Best Original Score

Usually this would go to Jonny Greenwood, but it seems typical that he'll win the Oscar for the first score of his that falls flat. Whatever, Jonny.

Best Original Song

COuldn't care less.

Best Sound

Couldn't care less

Best Film Editing

Couldn't care less

Best Visual Effects
These matters are best disposed of from a great height. Over water.

i'm holding off posting my ballot until the last minute, because i'm still watching things (as of a few minutes ago, have now seen all ten best pic nominees), and without editing features, i only want to post the final version of my ballot. i'll tally this poll in the early afternoon (my time) on sunday march 27, oscars day, so that's the deadline -- anyone who wants to vote or post a new ballot, please do before then!

for comparison (both with our results and the actual results) i'll post what appear to be, from very cursory research, the betting favourites in the major categories:

Best Picture: The Power of the Dog or CODA

i checked two betting sites, and they listed different favourites. nothing else appears to have much of a shot

Best Director: Jane Campion

everyone else is a major longshot

Best Actor: Will Smith

Benedict Cumberbatch has an outside chance, no one else seems to

Best Actress: Jessica Chastain

Nicole Kidman is a bit more in this race than Cumberbatch is in the Actor one (and Penelope Cruz might be too, according to one site), but is still a longshot

Best Supporting Actor: Troy Kotsur

Kodi Smit-Mcphee is sort of in this race too, more so than Kidman or Cumberbatch are in theirs

Best Supporting Actress: Ariana DeBose

Campion to win Director is the biggest lock, by the odds, of all the categories above, but DeBose is the next closest to a sure thing

Adapted Screenplay: CODA

The Power of the Dog is right in this race though.

Original Screenplay: Licorice Pizza

This and Best Pic seem to be the closest categories -- it's basically a tossup between this and Belfast

Animated Feature: Encanto

The Mitchells vs the Machines is second in the odds, but Encanto is nearly a lock.

Documentary Feature: Summer of Soul

Flee has some chance at this too.

International Feature: Drive My Car

If it got a Best Pic nomination, it's hard to see it losing this prize, it's almost a lock in the betting, Flee is a distant second

Cinematography: Dune

Dune has a huge edge over Power of the Dog

Production Design: Dune

Nightmare Alley has a bit of a shot too

Costume Design: Cruella

Dune has a shot here though

Makeup: The Eyes of Tammy Faye

The film is named for makeup, kind of, so it makes sense if it wins, Dune and Cruella have outside chances

Editing: Dune

This one is quite close, King Richard is right in it, and Power of the Dog isn't too far behind either

Sound; Dune

This one is not close at all.

Song; No Time to Die

The song from Encanto is in this too, but is a clear underdog.

Score: Dune

The Power of the Dog score is second in the odds, but it's sort of a longshot.

Effects: Dune

Basically a lock.

I guess I shouldn't expect any more ballots, so here are the results. SCFZ had a clear favourite film (the best pic winner) though i expect if m. arkadin and roscoe had posted longer ballots, licorice pizza might have fared a lot better. and i doubt this has ever happened: our supporting acting winners have (almost) the same first name

SCFZ Picks the Oscars -- RESULTS

Best Picture: Drive My Car (Ryusuke Hamaguchi)

Best Director: Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car)

Best Actor: Will Smith (King Richard)

Best Actress: Kristen Stewart (Spencer)

Best Supporting Actor: Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog)

Best Supporting Actress: Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter)

Best Original Screenplay: The Worst Person in the World

Best Adapted Screenplay: Drive My Car

Best Animated Feature: The Mitchells vs The Machines

Best International Feature: Drive My Car (Ryusuke Hamaguchi)

Best Documentary Feature (tie) :
Attica
Summer of Soul

Best Documentary Short: The Queen of Basketball

Best Live Action Short: Please Hold

Best Animated Short: The Windshield Wiper

Best Production Design (tie) :
West Side Story
Nightmare Alley

Best Cinematography (tie) :
West Side Story
The Power of the Dog

Best Costume Design (tie) :
West Side Story
Cruella
Cyrano

Best Makeup and Hairstyling (tie) :
Cruella
The Eyes of Tammy Faye

Best Original Score: The Power of the Dog

the only film with more than 3 nominations that won nothing from us is Belfast, a film i actually thought was good, though no one else seemed to. but of the films that are very likely to win multiple awards in real life, the one that scfz did not seem to care much for was CODA, a film i did not think was good.

i guess some awards are already in:

Makeup: The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Editing: Dune
Production Design: Dune
Original Score: Dune
Sound: Dune
Live Action Short: The Long Goodbye
Animated Short: The Windshield Wiper
Documentary Short: The Queen of Basketball

so far every betting favourite has won (even if the vanity fair update said the editing award for dune was a surprise). the picks don't line up all that well with scfz's, outside of the short film categories, which only john ryan voted in -- his picks match two of the three winners.

after a couple of agreements with the academy choices early on (mostly with a couple of the awards to dune, and to the shorts), scfz basically agreed with the academy on nothing besides that will smith deserved a prize. so that's kind of reassuring.

The slap was real. The Academy doesn't want or plan that kind of ugly controversy, and neither do the two actors involved.
These matters are best disposed of from a great height. Over water.
