SCFZ poll: John Boorman

Post by flip »

Polling the films of John Boorman

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half* of the Boorman films you've seen, up to a maximum of 8. So if you've seen 6 films, you can vote for 3, and if you've seen 20, you can vote for up to 8.

* If you've seen an odd number, you can round up when deciding the length of your ballot -- e.g if you've seen 7, you can vote for 4, and if you've seen 15, you can vote for the maximum of 8.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

The General
Zardoz
Point Blank
Deliverance
Hell in the Pacific
The Emerald Forest

seen 11, haven't seen any of these (or any other boorman film for that matter) in many years, and didn't care for the last couple on my list but liked them better than the others i've seen, looks like leo the last is the best-known of the ones i've not seen yet

a few surprises to me -- i thought deliverance would win this easily, but it didn't even make the top two. ignoring his final three films (none of which got any support) only two boorman features failed to get a vote, beyond rangoon (understandably), and leo the last. i haven't seen it, but i had been under the impression that film was fairly well-regarded, and it won boorman a best director prize at cannes. but no votes, maybe it's underseen, it has very few views on letterboxd, but it's the only feature from boorman's first 30 years of filmmaking that got no support.

results
1. Point Blank (1967) — 23 pts
2. Excalibur (1981) — 21 pts
3. Deliverance (1972) — 13 pts
4. Catch Us If You Can (1965) — 10 pts
5. Zardoz (1974) — 7 pts
6. Hell in the Pacific (1968) — 6.5 pts
6. Hope and Glory (1987) — 6.5 pts
8. The General (1998) — 5 pts
9. Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) — 3 pts
10. The Emerald Forest (1985) — 2.5 pts
11. The Tailor of Panama (2001) — 1 pt
12. Where the Heart Is (1990) — 0.5 pts
