SCFZ poll: Norman Jewison
SCFZ poll: Norman Jewison
Polling the films of Norman Jewison
The rules:
- your list can include no more than half* of the Jewison films you've seen, up to a maximum of 8. So if you've seen 6 films, you can vote for 3, and if you've seen 20, you can vote for up to 8.
* If you've seen an odd number, you can round up when deciding the length of your ballot -- e.g if you've seen 7, you can vote for 4, and if you've seen 15, you can vote for the maximum of 8.
- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.
- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

might slow the poll pace over the next week, next poll might start next tuesday or later instead of this friday
when i look over the titles in jewison's filmography, i always think i should have seen twelve of them, but i've only seen six, might watch some for the poll... edit: seen 7:

Seen 3.
Fiddler on the Roof.
My wife watched it for the first time recently, and I re-watched about 20 minutes of it with her and it struck me as nowhere near as good as I had remembered it. So it gets my vote solely for sentimental/biographical reasons, as it had a pretty huge impact on me when I was much younger. I did not particularly care for either Moonstruck or The Hurricane.

Oh, I totally forgot he directed those! I love Send Me No Flowers, it's a fascinating Rock Hudson's Home Movies text. All about Rock Hudson looking for a man who would be a good husband... for (ostensibly) his wife Doris Day after Rock passes away.

ended up being a close contest, i had no idea moonstruck (or the thomas crown affair for that matter) was so well thought of around here. jewison made more than a half-dozen features after making moonstruck, and not one of them got a vote (including the hurricane which was a surprise to me though i haven't seen it). his lone best picture winner, from his five films that were nominated, wins the poll:

seeing rollerball and thomas crown on this makes me realize we haven't done mctiernan yet...
with only 11 features he's definitely on the borderline, but since most of the movies should be fairly well seen he might be a good choice?
i've seen eight without ever making any special effort to watch his films, so i'd bet several people have seen 9+, so yeah, should be a good poll especially if some people are interested in him as a director - i like the polls that produce a bit of conversation
Yeah, I've seen ten, so McTierman isn't a problem from my end, at least in numbers of movies seen. Heh.
Might be tough to get a full top ten though since there could be a couple that don't get votes, but we'll see, maybe Rollerball has some quiet admirers.

Rollerball will definitely get a vote from me.
