Banner competition

Post by --- »

A couple of people made banners before the migration, and they look great, but I'm not sure their dimensions are ideal for the layout we've got now.

I set up the banner and used a blank 1080x180 image. What do you guys think of those sort of dimensions? I think they're great for a forum like this with a sleek, efficient, not-scroll-heavy layout. And they look good on the phone, only taking up a small fraction of the height of the screen.

So, how about whoever is interested in making a banner for the board make one (or more, if you've got multiple ideas) with a width between 1000 and 1200 and a height between 180 and 270 and after everyone (who wants to) has had a chance to submit their entry, we vote on them. Probably not a simple single vote; maybe more like, pick your top 3 and that'll give them 3-2-1 points each

Banners should refer to us as SCFZ, not S---- C------- F--- Z---! We decided on the old board to ditch the longform title and leave an air of mystery around the exact meaning of the abbreviation for any newcomers to our hood

Okay, so I was wrong, as is obvious to one who's taken a still from an HD video file and checked the dimensions.

Can someone explain why shit is called 1080p if it's actually 1200 or 1920 pixels in width?

So yeah, just make shit bannerish in size. Some height between 180 and 270, and some width between 1000 and 1200

idk i kinda sorta like the big blank white space. if anything, i might add only a lil handdrawn scfz brandname in like the lower righthand corner, but other than that i think it's punk as fuxk

oh no, i'd thought we'd left the ghastly lo-fi behind - i was hoping for a bit more luxe. obviously i approved of the ashik kerib bird/camera suggestion. if we can't have birds and cameras, can we have cats and (medusa) eyes? haven't yet found a squashed enough image tho, or a good enough quality one...

I really like this one. I see we have the same sorta aesthetic going on. Simple sans serif letters on nicely composed shot. And both of us digging that gaze shit (based on your other composition)

From what film is this one?

 don't say that! smz

i like all the banners. but if we go with a gaze one, can we have something, if not gender-neutral, then at least not some desperately sad girl making fuck-me eyes, unless we want this place to be a bro-fest forever?

(by the way is there a way to add more board themes? they're all masculine robot colors - i could do with a warmer one, where's the pink, violet and yellow themes?)

Hmm, fair! I assume you mean the La Belle Captive still? The other one I entered features sad girl eyes AND sad boy eyes! SADNESS FOR ALL!

I have an idea for a banner you might like, sally....

The Leopard Man and Hutton ones are nice, they also seem like pretty good representations of the collective taste buds of the board.

aw, i didn't mean to pick on you directly! i just wanted to forestall a certain direction in case your creativity proved too inspiring....although i guess it is a fair representation of cinema...

perhaps you could make it so that it cycles through a gallery of stills, changing every time you visit?

I dislike all the suggested banners so far.

So I'm still in favor of the old one (bland, child's writing, black on white).

PS: Ok, the last 2 by rischka aren't bad. But still...
To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

I'm fine with leaving the low-fi behind for the new site, but the designation "Super Champion Film Zone" is sorta innately low-fi in its, I hope, ironic conceit. I've no problem with that, but don't really want the name or the site to be taken too seriously either lest the whole pretentious circle jerk concept read as even more fitting. There is, after all, a reason circle jerking signifies both ineffectual self satisfying masculinity and pretentiousness. Not that giving in to kitsch would be a better choice, as that's the facile inverse of the same solipsism, placing the satisfaction in enjoying the "wrong" while avoiding the risk of asserting a "right".

Regularly changing the banner might be the best thing in that regard.

Looked into a cycling banner. It's possible, but beyond my current knowledge of the forum software. Something I'll look into again down the road

Definitely the banner can change regularly. I like rischka's suggestion of six months

Let's aim to have the first banner up by January 1. So, let's say, have your entries in by December 21
