1993 Poll 2.0

Post by Evelyn Library P.I. »

Choose your favorite films from 1993 (according to IMDB).

Each person can vote for up to 20 films. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number.

Twenty-film ballots can be formatted as follows:
- Five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- Four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- Two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- No tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film
- A 20-film three-tier ballot is not possible as yet (pending revision of the present scoring system)

A tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
- A five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
- A four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
- A three tier ballot (scored 5-3-1) can include only 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, or 3 films
- A two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
- Ballots that are 19, 17, 13, 11, 7 or 1 films must be no tiers (in the present scoring system)

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. You may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline. Ballots posted by new members who have not participated in other parts of the forum will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and are not guaranteed inclusion on the final list.

Deadline for 1993 lists will be Sunday, October 31st at around midnight EDT.

OK heres what I got.

The date for SHACKLES (Nansalmaagin Uranchimeg) is 1993 on LB, 1998 on IMDb, and various other dates online (1994, even 1991), so who knows. Otherwise I'd have two Mongol films on here, an unusual situation to say the least. The second, RUNNING ANTELOPE (I. Nyamgavaa), ain't on IMDb at all but is listed as a 1993 on the director's Wikipedia page - according to which it also turned up at the 1994 Berlin festival - so I'm gonna go ahead and put that on in there. Someone subbed it, sorta:

I have the year as a good one, but with many of the movies unseen for many years now, so hard to tell whether I'd feel differently about them now. Still, the US trend towards more independentesque filmmaking again, after a decade in decline, allowed for some more unusual movies to be made by directors who could have done more in the arty mainstream film side had not the window closed so soon after being opened again, with studios flattening out the artiness to the more standard feel good award chasing adult oriented flicks before the next big wave of juvenilia again took over. It's a a bit like a more subdued version of the early seventies into the eighties, but where that game had already been played so the studios weren't in a panic about it.

Sure choices:
Household Saints
Latcho Drom
Calendar

Likely possibilities:
Sonatine
The Cement Garden
Helas por moi
The Bride with White Hair
Flesh and Bone
Green Snake
The Puppetmaster
Music of Chance

Not unlikely:
The Legend
Groundhog Day
The Piano
Abraham's Valley
Wittgenstein
Body Snatchers
Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould
Naked
Moving
Farewell My Concubine
The Blue Kite
Germinal
In the Name of the Father
The Secret Garden
Women from the Lake of Secret Souls
Painted Skin
Accione Mutante
Two Small Bodies
Mad Dog and Glory
Patlabor 2

Possibly:
Red Rock West
The Wedding Banquet
Stalingrad
Suture
The Heroic Trio
My Favorite Season
Eagle Shooting Heroes
Hail Sarajevo
Age of Innocence
Iron Monkey
Tai Chi Master
Blue
Rising Sun
Wilder Napalm
M Butterfly
Gettysburg
The Anchoress
The Thief and the Cobbler
A Perfect World
King of the Hill
Ballad of Little Joe
Mille Bolle Blu
Baby of Macon
Romeo is Bleeding
The Wrong Man
Hotel Room
Leprechaun

Short Cuts, By Altman... So, every m/f relationship is a gynocide waiting to happen? Pretty grim.

Tangentially, 1993's a pretty good year for horror...

I have to admit, 1993 is one of the years that makes me miss the old system with the undisputed number 1 - which is almost ever the case - but everything else falls far, far behind Hélas pour moi. Oh well - I'll go with the 4/4/4/4/4 system for maximum payout - and highlight the excellent and overlooked wordless and claustrophobic near-masterpiece Libera me as well.

Hélas pour moi (1993, Jean-Luc Godard)
Libera me (1993, Alain Cavalier)
Smoking/No Smoking (1993, Alain Resnais)
Short Cuts (1993, Robert Altman)
-
Trois couleurs: Bleu / Three Colors: Blue (1993, Krzysztof Kieslowski)
Mùi du du xanh / The Scent of Green Papaya (1993, Tran Anh Hung)
Le tombeau d'Alexandre / The Last Bolshevik (1993, Chris Marker)
The Baby of Mâcon (1993, Peter Greenaway)
-
L'arbre, le maire et la médiathèque (1993, Éric Rohmer)
The Age of Innocence (1993, Martin Scorsese)
Carlito's Way (1993, Brian De Palma)
A Perfect World (1993, Clint Eastwood)
-
Ba wang bie ji / Farewell My Concubine (1993, Kaige Chen)
Tombstone (1993, George P. Cosmatos)
Ma saison préférée / My Favorite Season (1993, André Téchiné)
Schindler's List (1993, Steven Spielberg)
-
Lady Chatterley (1993, Ken Russell)
Die Rebellion (1993, Michael Haneke)
D'Est (1993, Chantal Akerman)
Waga jinsei saiaku no toki / The Most Terrible Time in My Life (1993, Kaizô Hayashi)

Do note, many of these have not been seen in a long time. I am particularly interested in how The Age of Innocence would hold up, as I have since read (and LOVED) the book. The Colour trilogy is also high on my rewatch list.

Final List

Films seen: 110+

I actually DID watch some 1993 films during the last months (and weeks), though that was rather a coincidence, as I usually do not watch films for polls (full disclosure: non of them made it into the list).
Still, a weird year for me, as it's one of those years where I've seen some of my favorites a loooong time ago.

As I have over 40 favorites from this year, it was very hard choosing a mere 20, so I mostly kicked out those I hadn't seen for a long time...

5 tiers

Flesh and Bone (Steve Kloves, USA)

Hey, Greg -- isn't it odd how there's a cluster of movies this year where the nuke-fam father becomes a darkside shadow of himself and returns to the family unit to destroy it? Clean, Shaven... Falling Down... The Dark Half...
