On this theme, you may be interested to know that the version most often in circulation today is a postwar 1951 re-edit by Blasetti. The only change is that he removed a final scene set in the present that had veterans of the Risorgimento saluting Fascist soldiers/blackshirts.

Ah-ha... I didn't know that. Thanks, Ev. The only thing approaching a red flag that I noticed was the way the movie emphasized that Garibaldi's strategy involved establishing a benevolent dctatorship in Sicily... which, in context, looks like a quick/easy way to legitimize Benito's reign.

For Ulmer's birthday, I watched Thunder Over Texas, Ulmer's only B series western. Unfortunately, it's not much good.

La belle de nuit (Louis Valray).

Two French movies from this year about a Parisian chap who's jilted by a lady and who in some distant place (Toulon this time - not so distant as La Grande Jeu's North Africa) meets a lady who's the spittin image of her. I liked em both about equally. However, based on this alone I don't see why the mysterious director's "rediscovery" (see here: https://www.criterion.com/current/posts ... uis-valray) occasioned so much fanfare among so-called cineastes. That's the French, though. They tend to make a big deal out of little things.

Eclipse (Shimizu Hiroshi).

Late silent melodrama with a rather complicated plot about a feller who, though quiet and unassuming, has a devastating effect on women - and the trouble that causes him and them. The worst luck falls to a handsome charming friend who has better job prospects yet loses out twice to quiet-and-unassuming. Has some of those fine Shimizu touches, but it's far from his finest hour.
