i'd like to do one for films about film/making. always get too excited and think the meta is going to drag me through the screen, but it's nice to keep track of them

and if we do coming of age (ugh can't stand em) can we do a going of age one too, for old people and the lives they no doubt must have, though you'd hardly know it from cinema

Biker movies!!

Like in these lists:

https://letterboxd.com/thedude1973/list ... vies-list/
https://letterboxd.com/liveandrew/list/biker-movies/
https://letterboxd.com/jarrettduncan/li ... loitation/
https://letterboxd.com/monstervision/li ... y/release/
https://letterboxd.com/drymonema/list/a ... film-list/

And cause I love the genre and need to explore more, I've also made my own (short) list. Not included is stuff where bikers and biking in my opinion doesn't play a prominent enough role (like Roustabout, Mad Max, Ruckus, Burst City, Dangerous Men, etc.):

I wonder if people here would be interested in doing a James Bond poll?

I know that Bond films are not really a SCFZ type of thing, but, given that this year might see the release of 25th official Bond movie, we could try to compile the list of our favorite adventures of 007.

Also, as I’ve never run a poll before, I’m only making a suggestion for someone else to undertake the task.

Bond movies were my entry point into the world of cinema (From Russia With Love -> North By Northwest -> Other Hitchcock -> Kurosawa / Leone if I recall correctly) so I'd be happy to run that poll when the new one is released, haven't revisited most of them in years so could be fun to do a mini-marathon.

I was a huge Bond fan between the age of 7 and 10, so I'd love such a poll. Have also seen all the films numerous times since then, so I should not have too much difficulty ranking them.
My first 2 films at the cinema (at age 3 and 5) were the 2 Bond films with Timothy Dalton from the 80s (which my parents took me to see), and I've made it a tradition to see every new Bond film since then at the theater during general release.

PS: Counting non-EON films as well, we currently have 27 (and the new one will be no. 28) - I haven't seen two of those, though (Casino Royale (1954) and Casino Royale (1967)).

You would do the right thing. It's the only good Bond movie with Roger Moore.

Because we're told from young age that life ends at 30. That's why you have motorcycle deaths and overdoses - people have no sense of what they can do, for how long and that there's no LEGAL boundaries to take whatever is free. Life is smörgåsbord, so to speak. Just listen to priests' BS rants about sex - and act exactly the opposite.

(yes, and I'm also referring to Kaiser, my submission in the genre cup)

Young at Heart (documentary) is the first great film that comes to mind when you say 'going of age'.

I forgot to 'connect' my writings with your remark that there is no 'going of age' films, and that there's excess of 'coming of age' films. Well simply life is fastest during adolescence - it makes plenty of interesting subjects, certainly more exciting than sitting in front of telly whole day, putting woolen slippers on, touching breads in a supermarket in order to find the softest one, worshipping the authority and authoritarian politicians in general, falling asleep in a sofa like 5x a day, etc... Also, from aesthetic point of view, they're less eyecandy than youths.

I personally don't mind watching old people in film, but I certainly prefer the opposite subgenre.

well i want to know what happened to the idea of venerating wisdom & experience. or at least to find them less interesting than the idiotic fumblings of youth. i was an anguished teen, i know what has passed, what i want to know is what is coming - how is watching someone put woollen slippers on less aesthetic than watching children make out?

I tried to explain why these films aren't being made, it's because broadest audience seeks for entertainment. It doesn't have anything to do with my or your own film taste, just realize that you belong to the narrowest niche as you can imagine. For example I can't name three persons I've met who watched a 1920s movie in my entire life - now think of that.

It is in our adventurist's nature to seek what's there shortage of, just like in sex where normal intercourse doesn't satisfy you anymore at all. That's why everyday people are so boring, but they're most numerous and (not only film) just about any industry adapts to them.

Stating that 'coming-of-age' is all about making out is a bit of simplification; there's plenty which don't delve into that at all. On the other hand, not fitting and being rejected causes failures and trauma for the rest of your life. Not having directions from your surroundings doesn't bring anything good. And if you realize there's an excess of something, like making this kind of film, then by probability there has to be a significant amount of watchable movies among the loads of garbage.

I must add that I'd also love to watch more senior citizens' issues, but also middle-age. Being around 40 brings many questions, too.

Personally I don't think seniors are that wise; their brain is usually a pulp which is a feel I get from discussions with them. One example: they think everything what's written in the papers must be true. They don't have any idea of things like marketing, political & social context, etc. They simply CAN'T grasp the idea of a in-your-face lie in a mainstream media. Old geezer with a bad smell talks about Russians/Americans and secret plan of the EU but can't tell of whereabouts of his glasses.

i have a book on a shelf, agamben's infancy & history, which i have never read, on the (childish) fear that i might find out we are irretrievably doomed, but i just had a quick scan through it and all i got is a headache, so it might be okay to read. but that does mean that until i've read it i have no points to make about coming of age films other than for me personally i don't particularly want to watch any. (even if they're silent movies!)

manoel de oliveira was making movies past 100, perhaps you were talking to the wrong seniors...but that would be a good project, to watch all his films in chronology, or any director with a long filmography and see what changes as they get older...

I think I'll start a genre poll, to see if I like running a poll. I've been wanting to field folks favourite pirate movies, so I'd be interested in doing that. Would people be interested in this? Also, is 'pirates' too specific - it could be 'swashbuckler' more broadly, if that would be preferred.

Nautical would be fun too, but I think that would be a separate grouping, albeit with some overlap in movies.

i'm happy to answer any polling questions if you have any! feel free to pm me, or post on the forum. my preference for genre polls was always to poll established genres (sci-fi, romcom, western, etc), and i think we still have several of those to do, and because of that preference, i like the swashbuckler idea better than pirates since it feels more like a true genre to me. but whoever runs a poll is entitled to make the rules, and if a pirate poll happens, i'll definitely cast a ballot!

Thanks, flip, I appreciate it! I think I have a good system worked out now, but I'll be search to reach out if I run into any trouble.

I like the idea of doing a swashbuckler poll, so I'll start that soon.

excited but also realise i have no idea of the actual scope of swashbuckling (please define!) and also that i 've hardly seen any, although the ones i have were disproportionately enjoyable and thus occupy a larger realm of my imagination than the actual limited ballot i could produce would warrant.

What about this Bond poll I proposed earlier?

Bond #25 No Time to Die is set to premiere later this month and will open in theaters on September 30th. If enough people are up for it, I guess we could run it some time around its release, maybe for a few weeks in October?

Yeah let's do it, I'll just use flip's extended director rules and it should be easy enough, I've been pretty sporadic lately but should be able to start the thread soon.

That would be great!

Though I haven't seen them all : I still need to watch the 1954 CASINO ROYALE and the 1967 CASINO ROYALE (and of course the new Bond NO TIME TO DIE), which would currently make me 25/28.
