1954 poll 2.0

Post by thoxans »

choose your favorite films from 1954 (according to imdb)

each person can vote for up to 20 films. do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number. ballots can be formatted as follows:
- five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- no tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film

a tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
-- a five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
-- a four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
-- a two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
*any number of films up to 20 that is not a multiple of five, four, or two cannot be tiered. apologies to enthusiasts of 19, 17, 13, 11, 9, 7, 3, and 1

users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. you may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline. ballots posted by new members who have not participated in other parts of the forum will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and are not guaranteed inclusion on the final list

deadline for 1954 lists will be saturday, july 31st, at approximately whatever time i feel like yo

Preliminary-style, I like these a lot

La Ilusion Viaja En Tranvia
Rear Window
El Rio Y La Muerte - Bunuel
La Strada

and these a little

As Negro - Fernando Mendez
Los Aventureros - Fernando Mendez
Human Desire - Lang
Private Hell 36 - Don Siegel
Rebelion De Los Colgados - A Crevenna, E Fernandez (Local critics dismissed it for lurid, irreponsible, exploitative... all I really remember is a fade-out on P Armendariz asking a young peasant woman "You like those boots, don't you?")
Them!
The opposite of 'reify' is... ?

it's only when you do year polls you realize eg for instance bloody hell mizoguchi what were you on to knock out three masterpieces this year?

also, two of cinema's hottest men looking hot in great films:
giorgos foundas in magic city and omar sharif & his ripped shirt in siraa fil-wadi

then korea doing the non-woman woman thing in the hand of destiny, but, still, good film, and one of the best indonesian films i've seen - after the curfew. i really really loved another sky when i saw it moons ago, but not sure if it holds up now?

& nothing that's making me desperately excited on my watchlist, so probably won't get to many, but uh, i have never seen seven samurai so might rectify that. at least there appears to be less singing & dancing this year thank god! (at least, it seems easier to avoid it)

An Odyssey film from this era is mighty tempting but Douglas in the lead role, not so much.

Def need to prioritize the Seven Samurai rewatch, t'was the first old foreign canon film I watched as a teenager. Loved it but haven't seen it since

Obscurest film on my list: Princess of the Nile. An entertaining, trashy B film, basically where Lang got the snake dance idea from.

20,000 leagues under the sea does something very powerful - represent the full range of guys that exist. from kirk to james mason to peter lorre to paul lukas. there might be other types of men (a george sanders or a cary grant are rare butterflies) but this movie really hits all the bases.
