I'm sure Lubitsch made better musicals than The Love Parade and I'm not usually a nostalgic fella, but I can't help it, the first and only time I've seen this film was quite memorable for me. It was at a national film festival where I also got to meet Kiarostami and even asked him to sign my copy of Copie Conforme as if he was some kind of Hollywood star (younger me could be such an idiot). Simple times.

For my last film of the poll, I decided to revisit Wild Orchids (Sidney Franklin) since I didn't enjoy it too much the first go around. A second viewing improved my opinion of it somewhat; the orientalist ideas and Nils Asther as an exotic Javanese prince are still repellant but the way the film toes the line between the insecurities of Garbo's husband Lewis Stone and the ambivalent fantasies of Garbo are more complicated than initially apparent. Won't be adding it to my list but I liked wrapping this poll up by rewatching something to see if my opinions on it significantly changed.

doing all the not-even-on-imdb stuff now (our man j c mol doesn't seem to have anything for 1929 but he was filmhand on a dick laan short about a boy with tuberculosis, the tulip time-lapse is very telling)

but the dutch still at it - there's a nice short about electricity in the hague on EYE by otto van neijenhoff, and of course willy mullens has made a million

and in the uk there's a whole 90 min doc about british docks...and a short that does all the sights of england in 11 mins...
