1975 poll 2.0

Post by thoxans »

choose your favorite films from 1975 (according to imdb)

each person can vote for up to 20 films. do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number. ballots can be formatted as follows:
- five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- no tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film

a tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
-- a five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
-- a four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
-- a two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
*any number of films up to 20 that is not a multiple of five, four, or two cannot be tiered. apologies to enthusiasts of 19, 17, 13, 11, 9, 7, 3, and 1

users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. you may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline. ballots posted by new members who have not participated in other parts of the forum will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and are not guaranteed inclusion on the final list

deadline for 1975 lists will be monday, may 31st, at approximately whatever time i feel like yo

For those looking for something really obscure in 1975, there's the "landmark of Assamese cinema" Ganga Chiloner Pankhi, called in English alternately WINGS OF THE TERN, FEATHERS OF THE TERN, and THE WINGS OF THE ALBATROSS. Take your pick. Here's an article on the film:

https://scroll.in/reel/820296/lost-and- ... onir-pakhi

And the only place I know of that has a subtitled version is INDIANCINE.MA - you have to know how to grab it from there (there was a thread on this).

not going to watch a lot for 1975 since i doubt any would really newly enter my top twenty on this strangely stonking year

we can't have one favourite now, so i do, but it's an all time favourite rather than just for 1975. if the female gaze was ever something possible or desirable, then the germ of it is in duras, and india song....oh my ♥

moses und aron is an almost torrid, demented, stunning straub/huillet on the necessity of form (lol), love a good jesus movie and rossellini serves up his great one, barry lyndon is pretty much the only kubrick i like, seems churlish to ignore the impact of tarkovsky on a young cinephile, pleasure party one of the great chabrols, there's iosseliani, manoel de oliveira, ruiz, zulawski, krolikiewicz...kanellopoulos' memories of a sunday is mannered but beautiful....african cinema is alive! (muna moto ♥), the first angelopoulos we were ever instructed to ardently watch by dimmy (travelling players, and worth it)...the best shoe in cinema since pickford's cinderella (la bête)...and one of the most gorgeous most necessary british films ever made, winstanley. so many films i have loved for years (should in that case probably not rewatch)

Image

excited to get to:
the irony of fate
the captivating star of happiness
lady inger of ostrat (medieval!)
the blind owl
elckerlyc (medieval!)
que la fête commence!
towers of silence
hotel pacific
what shall i do with this sword? (one of my last remaining monteiros :( )
hustruer
the romantic englishwoman (!!!)

also will reiterate my request i made in the watchlist thread for subs for sachariev's villa zone Вилна зона - anyone???

i'm not sure what you'd make of several of the films on my list, but cursa and the blind owl are probably the two i'd be most optimistic you'd like, one day i hope to compare the blind owl with the ruiz version. i saw cursa on youtube at some point. i just did a quick search, and i didn't find the subtitled print there, so i'm guessing it was taken down. there does seem to be a nice looking copy there though (and one very poor print too), so if you can find subs and know how to marry subs with a youtube vid (i don't know how to do that but i gather it's possible), that might be an option!

“In the mid-Seventies, I was working as a projectionist for this crummy movie theatre in downtown LA. The owner owed me six weeks back wages and when I ask him for the money, the scumbag has the gall to inform me that I’m getting laid off Christmas week. If he’d known my reputation for mischief, he might have thought twice about it. On my last day of work, I had to project a Christmas matinee for kids. Before the main feature, I added an unannounced opener to the program called “Satan Claus”. I fled the theatre right after my film ended but I heard the owner had to refund the entire box office. Even then, several outraged parents filed a lawsuit against the theatre. Merry Christmas, you cheap bastard!” – J.X. Williams
