Haphazard pursuits of Sirman Deville for all Shocking & Extreme

Post by movie tickets forger »

In the past, I watched a few films labeled as "new french extremity" and, in some indefinite future, I expect to continue with this pursuit... https://www.kinometer.com/?tag=4884
Thus (before I will pick up where I left off), if anyone has anything to say/post on this subject I will gladly hear/read.
So far, as the best SCFZ post to the theme, I consider this...
viewtopic.php?p=25800#p25800
whenever i'm dating a girl and she starts professing her adoration for a noe movie, i know it's over. why? there are just some things you can automatically know about a woman when she tells you her favourite movie is "enter the void":
- being a progressive feminist is an important part of her identity, but she displays no interest in indigenous sovereignty
- she is a struggling artist, doing the work of MARXIST SAINTS, and you are a fucking suit at a law firm. incidentally, she receives an allowance from her parents, who are both financial advisors
- she believes deeply in astrology, and the only reason why you don't is because you're beholden to the western chauvinist preoccupation with "reason"
- she very rarely eats meat, for ethical reasons. but everyone has cheat days. very occasionally she'll have some chicken or something. when she was in paris she had foie gras and it was delicious
- she consistently mentions the race of non-white persons, especially men, when it has no bearing on the story, especially when they're (often rightly) being portrayed negatively. "and there were like 10 asian guys there"... "this big group of east indian guys were all staring at me"... if you criticize this, you are being dismissive of her experience
- "look, a friend of mine from high school is a cop now, and he genuinely just wants to help people"

In the Shadow of the Blue Rascal?

Un chant d'amour?

Discard if I don't have a clue what this is about.

I gave New French Extremity another chance a while back and I made this gif to describe my reaction to Durmont's Humanité...

Of course I look up the term after posting, and the term refers to much newer stuff than the ones I mentioned. I think I just invented a new genre: Old French Extremity.

new french extremity always struck me as a weird thing - a kind of non-existent movement named after an atypically sloppy sentence from the usually very careful james quandt, which ended up collapsing the work of filmmakers with decade plus behind them (breillat, denis) with young art house adjacent upstarts (noe, bonello), vacationing austrians (haneke), marginal weirdos (grandieux), slick genre kids (aja, whatever the idiots who made martyrs and inside are named), pedestrian mainstream filmmakers (kassovitz)...

like the contemplative cinema term that some of the worst mubi commenters used to use all the time it has the effect of flattening rather than clarifying anything...thank god both phrases seem to have more or less disappeared in recent years.

There are no fast and hard rules, I am fine to put on my FRENCH EXTREMITY watchlist anything and everything (any FRENCH EXTREMITY garbage).
I like the new term OLD FRENCH EXTREMITY and I am interested to hear also any suggestions of any possible predecessors to NEW FRENCH EXTREMITY.
I am (mostly) far from being a fan of this cinema but (now and then) I want to watch some (to practice self-denial, self-torture).

that's a great movie (one of my favorite by breillat!) but it's about as extremist as that lovely old fairy tale series with shelley duvall!

breillat's followup sleeping beauty was a little disappointing, but i love arrieta's belle dormant, the most anti new french extremity film imaginable, and i think a quietly great movie...

I don't see Breillat's Fat Girl in the OP, surely that one's bundled in with this 'movement' as well?

As for old French extremity, maybe Blier (Going Places). Robbe-Grillet? Zulawski?

I saw it so long ago, but I remember the idea being that gay men are the ultimate misogynists because they don't like to have sex with women? I don't remember if that was taken too seriously within the film or not.I do remember that overall it felt like a parody of Duras made by someone who never actually read any Duras.

it's not parody sir - breillat meant it very seriously, based on traumatic experiences she has been very open about. i think she ends up in a very harmful place with the conclusions she draws and dramatizes in anatomy of hell but it's wrong not to take her seriously...

I had the same issue with Gérard Depardieu in Marguerite Duras' THE LORRY.
(theoretically) I can get that I should not project on those roles all the external connotations Gérard Depardieu or Rocco Siffredi can trigger, but (practically) I was not able to do so.

Thus (before I will pick up where I left off), if anyone has anything to say/post on this subject I will gladly hear/read.
My liking and distinction is more aligned to..

A wave of new contemporary French horror films that fall into the wider category of 'Extreme' cinema

While all of these filmmakers can be included. Not all of them continue to produce material in the genre or to the same degree.

Claire Denis, Bertrand Bonello, Philippe Grandrieux, Olivier Assayas, Vincent Dieutre, Jacques Nolot, Christophe Honoré
Patrice Chereau, Bruno Dumont, Gaspar Noé , Pascal Laugier

While I've seen all of these listed below. It's the ones marked with a red 'X' that I'd identify as the new horror directors

RAPE ME • BAISE-MOI (Despentes, V., Trinh Thi, C.) <-- extreme cinema but I wouldn't qualify it as a horror film.
TROUBLE EVERY DAY (Denis, C.)
↓ 2002
IRREVERSIBLE • IRRÉVERSIBLE (Noé, G.)
IN MY SKIN • DANS MA PEAU (de Van, M.)
↓ 2003
HIGH TENSION • HAUTE TENSION (Aja, A.)X
DEAD END (Andrea, J.-P., Canepa, F.)X
↓ 2004
MY MOTHER • MA MÈRE (Honoré, C.)
ORDEAL • CALVAIRE (du Welz, F.)X
↓ 2006
SATAN • SHEITAN (Chapiron, K.)
THEM • ILS (Moreau, D., Palud, X.)X
↓ 2007
INSIDE • À L'INTÉRIEUR (Bustillo, A., Maury, J.)X
FRONTIER(S) • FRONTIÈRE(S) (Gens, X.)X
↓ 2008
MARTYRS (Laugier, P.)X
VINYAN: LOST SOULS (du Welz, F.)

↓ 2011
LIVID • LIVIDE (Bustillo, A., Maury, J.)
↓ 2016
NOCTURAMA (Bonello, B.) <--- extreme cinema but I wouldn't qualify it as a horror film.
International Filmmakers Affiliated with the NEW [c]FRENCH[/c] EXTREMITY:
Michael Haneke, Lukas Moodysson, Lars Von Trier, Kim Ki-Duk, Matthew Barney, Fatih Akin, Patrick Chiha, Park Chan-Wook, Jan Bonny, Yorgos Lanthimos
Using the term 'extreme' cinema. These would be some other directors I'd associate with the genre:
Takashi Miike, Sion Sono, Waters, Jodorowsky, Almodovar, De La Iglesia, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tsukamoto, Villaronga, Makavejev, Blier, Sato, Spasojevic, Antti-Jussi, Kurzel, Belvaux, Zulawski, etc (There's a bunch more. I just can't think of them all right now)

I'd also suggest avoiding the term 'gore-porn' as it was first associated with a review of an Eli Roth (who I detest) film.

I tend to see a distinction between using graphic imagery in a more interesting manner than merely looking at some really awful no budget garbage. Whether it's content with sex and/or violence that's being highlighted. It is evidently not 'all' the same as many self-serving as early exploitation films were. For example, 'Human Caterpillar' (2009) is defintely an extreme film. However, there's very little content to make such a thing any more significant outside of the mere perverse concept alone.

I started to breakdown some sub-genres under the category of extreme but I'm not certain I want to elaborate on them.

At times, digging into such an area is like diving into a dollar bin of records. The majority are just duds but once in a while you find some worthy treasures.

It's a very bizarre action to use a porn star for a speaking part when what he's known for is being hung like a horse. Needless to say, neither of the films he did with Breillat amounted to much.

 I do love this reaction. Mine was also of a similar impression to Durmont's 'Humanite'. I'm also quite puzzled by his new series of musicals.

Thx for all the input!
I will try incorporate all into the watchlist.

Re: (real-life trivia vs. role in a film) Rocco Siffredi issue.
In the past, I was marveling in another thread about Gill Sans lettering.
Then, I was asked if I am aware of Eric Gill's real-life (nasty) background.
I dismissed it with hints to Proust's "Contre Sainte-Beuve" or Barthes' "Death of the Author".
And now I am doing exactly the opposite, admitting I can't get over the real-life connotations associated with Gerard Depardieu (his later friendly terms with freaks like Putin or Lukashenko) or Rocco Siffredi (his non-Breillat filmography).
I know Rocco Siffredi plays a role (it is not about him as a real person), but when he utters (with a serious expression on his face) anything about gender relations I can't help to (stupidly) giggle and don't listen to what he says (because my prevailing impression is that of parody).
In the same way, when I see Gerard Depardieu next to Marguerite Duras (in THE LORRY) with a serious expression on his face suggesting their deep mutual (intellectual) understanding, I can't help to (stupidly) giggle (again perceiving it mainly as a laughing matter — considering that real-life Depardieu is a guy who is capable of deep mutual understanding with freaky autocrats).
On the other hand, Catherine Breillat surely picked Rocco Siffredi for that role on purpose — being fully aware real-life trivia connotations related to him will be strongly perceived by viewers.
Maybe, I should rewatch ANATOMY OF HELL and (instead of giggling) try to listen to what is being said (as if no name actor would be playing the part — or to try to figure out what it means when Rocco Siffredi, in particular, is saying all that is being said — by "him" to "her").

consolation jiri, your inability to watch rocco siffredi in anatomy of hell may actually be your ability to watch rocco siffredi in anatomy of hell. i watched anatomy of hell without any extra-film connotations (no context or knowledge for siffredi as i have zero interest in his kind of willy-wanging porn) and so imagine that half of the film was lost on me also. maybe no one can actually watch that film

SHOCK!
I see Hollis Frampton is also one of the predecessors of the "new extremity".

1934 poll No4:
HANDS (Ralph Steiner, Willard Van Dyke)

oh, now, i see, hands are so practical! so extremely functional!
they can even sign a check, or hand over the cash...

i expected to see a highly poetic (near-to-abstract) short eulogizing the beauty of hands and thus (due to my false expectations) to watch this instead was utterly shocking!!!

The best/most shocking! bit is where the hands of the guy in the sailor outfit receives a hotel key from the hands of a clerk, cut to the hands of a bellboy receiving a tip from the now hotel guest, then a sharp cut to hands slamming a gas pump nozzle into a fuel tank slot. Nice and subtle association that.
