SCFZ poll: Wes Anderson

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Wes Anderson

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Wes Anderson films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Friday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: greg x, rischka, dt, silga, kanafani, brian d, greennui, ofrene, mesnalty, john ryan, roscoe, evelyn, thoxans, bure

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

The Grand Budapest Hotel
Moonrise Kingdom
Rushmore
The Fantastic Mr Fox
Bottle Rocket

seen ten, kind of like or dislike a lot of them roughly equally, so might decide in the end to make my list unranked, but it's ranked for now

anderson is such an odd/interesting case. he really is one of the only american directors of his generation to have some kind of name recognition outside of cinephile circles. i think he has a pretty interesting sensibility as a writer, and a visual facility that the more outwardly branded elements (some of the late films even remind me of powel and pressburger, if that makes any sense). of all of the super visible directors working in american film industry right now he's the one i'm most curious how his legacy will look a decade or so from now.

My ballot is exactly the same as Ofrene's!

After watching Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums 12 years ago I gave up on Wes Anderson, but I gave him another chance years later with Grand Budapest Hotel and loved it. His movies seem to get better steadily, but I was disappointed with Isle of Dogs. It's impressive visually, but I can do without the old "adults are bad, children are good" nonsense. At least Moonrise Kingdom is mildly sympathetic to the parent characters.

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

I detest the Wes Anderson's films I've seen. One of them was rather less offensive than the others, but it was so mediocre that calling it "best" feels like an abuse of the English language.
These matters are best disposed of from a great height. Over water.

seemed like a close contest halfway through the tally, and then one film just ran away with it. every anderson feature film got some support, though his latest got almost none:

results

1. Moonrise Kingdom (2012) -- 48 pts
2. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) -- 33 pts
3. Rushmore (1998) -- 29 pts
4. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) -- 26 pts
5. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) -- 20 pts
6. The Darjeeling Limited (2007) -- 15 pts
7. The Fantastic Mr Fox (2009) -- 12 pts
8. Hotel Chevalier (2007) -- 10 pts
9. Bottle Rocket (1996) -- 8 pts
10. Isle of Dogs (2018) -- 3 pts

Interesting. I can find myself charmed by his films somewhat regularly. But Moonrise kingdom is without a doubt one of my least favorites of his. I wouldn't have expected to see so much love for it.
