Probably less stoned than the Blonde Cobra people.

The Baby Carriage (Bo Widerberg)
'63 was one hell of a year for Widerberg. He was a writer that recently had gained prominence with his Cahiers du Cinema style film criticism, writing about the (according to him) sorry state of Swedish cinema, throwing the biggest shade at Bergman and his preoccupation with god in perhaps the most secular country in the world. "What Bergman exports abroad consists of mystic light and undisguised exoticism . . . [he] reinforces the most trivial myths about Sweden and the Swedes.” - BW...they would remain arch-enemies for the rest of their careers. Widerberg wanted a Swedish cinema that was more concerned with 'earthly' matters and decided to take matters into his own hands and released two films in 1963, The Baby Carriage (his debut) and Raven's End (the all-time classic).
Baby Carriage was a decent enough debut feature, a social realistic pregancy drama with Nouvelle Vague flourishes. It did feel like it was wearing it's influences on it's sleeve a tad too much at times though. It had some ace cinematography by Jan Troell (always enjoyed him more as DP than a director) and a neat, stoic lead performance by Inger Taube.

Very interesting, thanks! I didn't know Widerberg was a critic first.greennui wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 5:31 pm '63 was one hell of a year for Widerberg. Well, he was an author initially and wrote film criticism on the side. He had written several novels throughout the 50's but after becoming a director he never wrote another book and even lost more and more interest in writing screenplays as time went on, preferring improvisation and spontaneity. The screenplay for Elvira Madigan famously had one page with just "pick raspberries".Evelyn Library P.I. wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 6:20 pmVery interesting, thanks! Showdown (R.G. Springsteen, Universal-International)
The lone '63 viewing I could manage for the poll, and also given pride of place as my final viewing of 2020 ! It was the '63 I've most wanted to see, on Flip's recommendation. A black-and-white Audie Murphy western directed by Subject for Further Research R.G. Springsteen. I liked this one a lot — the plot is a grand tour of different western trope locales, and the cosy black-and-white images by Springsteen are eye-catching and memorable. A fine way to end my year in viewing!

The time period defining the thing is drawing to an end, and with it the thing itself. It will abandon its thingness and become only the memory of a thing in about two hours.
