2020 SCFZ Letterboxd Statpalooza

Post by kanafani »

Season's greetings!

Watch this space for the 2020 SCFZ letterboxd statpalooza.

I'll compile useless but fun trivia on SCFZ's 2020 movie watching habits, based on champs' letterboxd diary entries.

If you don't use the diary feature, fear not, all hope is not lost. I will try to also run 'all-time' numbers to answer some burning questions: Which directors are the highest rated by SCFZ? Which movies? What is the best movie year in history? What is the unofficial SCFZ top 100? etc.

Champs in my database (if your name is not here, my apologies, just let me know and I shall include you in the festivities).

Trivia questions:
1) How many unique movies have been logged in champs' diaries in 2020?
2) How logged the most movies in 2020?
3) Who is the most watched director in 2020?

Trivia:

1) 5280, now that I understand the question.
2) no comment
3) Ionno, Hong Sang-Soo seems like a contender, or Wong Kar-Wei? Oliveira? Unless one of the no-auteur-cred hacks I watch for completism should somehow outweigh twenty odd people. (Hyphen suppressed deliberately.

Oh, wait, maybe i misunderstood that #1 question -- I took it to mean "movies logged by only one member." Is it not that?

i haven't looked at any of the stats yet (yay stats!) so not sure if the questions have been answered yet, but here are my guesses:

1) i will guess an average of 285 unique films per person, not sure how many people there are
2) st gloede (not sure if a participant?) or johnryan i will guess, but this might be a question more about 'who uses letterboxd most' than about movie-watching, and about letterboxd activity i have no idea
3) because of the poll, i will guess lumiere!

edit:
-- i guessed 9690, actual answer 8093
-- johnryan came 2nd!
-- lumiere came 2nd!

sorry lencho i feel like i underestimated you :(

I was taken aback by seeing Douglas Sirk in the bottom of the directors list, and at first I thought that I had a bug for sure. But apparently the rating is driven by quite a few low-rated (minor?) Sirk movies, such as first legion, la habanera, and court concert.

OK I'm getting out of steam, so I will continue tomorrow.

Coming up, all-time stats!

If you think of some other interesting stat we can crunch for 2020, let me know!

love this kind of stuff, thanks kanafani! ideas for other things you could run if you like the ideas:

* maybe a 2-ratings-minimum top films from the year 2020 by average rating? kind of a preview/suggested viewings list in preparation for our best-of-2020 poll

* i find it interesting to see where scfz diverges from letterboxd consensus. so it might be interesting to see the films where the differences between scfzer average rating and letterboxd user average rating are highest and lowest (most negative). for lower-viewed films though, that might be tricky, because the scfz ratings might be meaningfully influencing the overall average, and you'd probably want to extract the scfz ratings from the letterboxd average. not sure what data is available to you, but if there are 's' scfzers who have given an average rating of 'a' to a film, and N letterboxd users in total who have given an average rating of 'A' to that film, i think you'd want to calculate

a - [(NA-sa)/(N - s)]

First one is simple enough!

I don’t have data on letterboxd averages and it would be a hassle to get them at this point, so unfortunately request #2 is out
