SCFZ poll: Paul Vecchiali

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Paul Vecchiali

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Vecchiali films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline up to three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: umbugbene, greennui, evelyn, bure, m arkadin, mrcarmady, nrh, brian d, mesnalty

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

we'll use the extended rules for this poll:

- if you've seen an odd number of vecchiali films, you can round up instead of down to determine the length of your ballot (e.g. if you've seen seven, you can vote for four instead of the usual three)

- if you've seen more than ten vecchiali films, you can vote for more than five. so if you've seen 13, you can vote for up to seven. longer ballots will help ensure we can get to a top ten. i'll only count up to eight films from one ballot though (so you can list a top ten if you want, but #9 and #10 won't get any points)

I tried femmes femmes a few years ago and only managed to watch a few minutes before I ran away screaming. Since then I’ve learned to appreciate and enjoy Vecchiali‘s ebullient theatricality and romanticism. Perhaps a revisit is in order.

kanafani, you can pick our next director if you like!

i'll start the new poll tomorrow (or later if we don't have a nomination yet) and i'll tally the feyder poll then too, so last chance to vote in that one

Does wang bing work? I got 9.
Or Kelly Reichardt? Got 9 as well.
Otherwise, Christian Petzold is overdue. I got 15

it looks like wang bing will work. kelly reichardt would also work, just based on the replies so far, if there was someone who had seen 10 of her films, but if no one has, then we'll have to wait to poll her - i need at least one 10+ viewer for any director we poll, just to be sure we can somehow get to a top ten. for petzold, we'd need a couple more people who have seen a few of his films (i'd bet they're around, just would want to confirm).

so if you'd like to poll wang bing, we can do that, or if you'd prefer to wait for more replies about reichardt and/or petzold, we can do that too!

the only vecchiali film i'd heard much about before this poll was femmes femmes, so for me, the winner is not a surprise, not sure about the rest of the results!

results

2. White Nights on the Pier (2014) — 7 pts
2. C’est la Vie! (1980) — 7 pts
4. Once More (1988) — 5 pts
4. Le Recit de Rebecca (1964) — 5 pts
6. The Strangler (1970) — 3 pts
6. Drugstore Romance (1979) — 3 pts
6. Rosa la Rose, Fille Publique (1986) — 3 pts
6. It’s Love (2015) — 3 pts

Number 2 and 3 are pretty big upsets. C’est la Vie! is the most extreme, with just 27 votes on IMDb. Seems to have become an unexpected forum mini-favourite due to the 1980 poll (I saw it thanks to the visuals/reviews there).
