still the grin-fest to beat, even if, as roscoe says, the ending lets it down (seriously she doesn't deserve him). not including lubitsch, this is probably the comedy i've rewatched the most, along with the lady eve

i've searched my fingers off now and from countries with large enough industries, i can't seem to find any danish, czech, spanish or argentinian films at all with subs. is this correct?

i guess, the film counts in the broad category of "nazi melodrama", tho half-jewish "honorary aryan" reinhold schunzel was not a nazi symphatizer and spent WW2 in U.S.
- "The son of a German father and a Jewish mother"
- "Despite being Jewish, Schünzel was allowed by the Nazis to continue making films for several years until he eventually left to live abroad."
- "He was influenced by filmmakers such as his mentor Richard Oswald and Ernst Lubitsch"
- "Schünzel's work was very popular in Germany and the Nazi regime gave him the title of Ehrenarier or Honorary Aryan, allowing him to continue to direct and act despite his Jewish heritage (his mother was Jewish). He found that the government, first under Kaiser Wilhelm II and later under Adolf Hitler, interfered with his film projects, impelling him to leave 1937. Schuenzel described both the Kaiser and Hitler "persons of recognized authority and the worst possible dramatic taste.""

however, i stumbled upon the "The Girl Irene" due to reading a book by Laura Heins called "Nazi Film Melodrama" (2013).
And there is some evidence that Nazi melodramas actually made less effective use of sound tracks than Hollywood melodramas. Ever wary of
excess, film critics in the Third Reich often wrote disapprovingly of the use of music to punctuate emotional moments in films. Das Mädchen Irene (The Girl Irene, 1936), for example, is an exceptional Third Reich melodrama, one that attempted to give music and camera work a higher degree of expressive power, and in which gesture is sometimes allowed to replace speech. The reviewer for the Film-Kurier commented on the film’s music as follows: “the use of the orchestra in crucial scenes is occasionally a bit overbearing.” Goebbels’s reaction to Das Mädchen Irene was even more damning, and he was so disgusted by the film that he cut short his private screening.

anyone else seen gerard rutten's rubber? think they blew the entire budget on the ending, and it's a strange little film, but featured a classic 'stock market montage' and it made me wonder when that stopped being a thing. anyone recall the most recently made movie they've seen one in?

also does anyone have an srt for bloodshed on wolf mountain?

thanks for both of those. i'm intrigued by the presentation of the musicians before the "action" of the film takes place. do you know of any earlier examples of films that do this, or was it something kirsanoff seems to have been playing with on his own?

Very brief impressions:

Desire - A Lubitsch film without Lubitsch and his touch. The elements/tone didn't quite gel for me.

The Devil-Doll - Kinda neat but also kinda slight.

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town - Likeable enough.

Sabotage - I never knew that Sabotage and Saboteur were two different films. Hitch didn't like the leading actor and I can see why, so bland I almost forgot how his face looked in-between scenes.

Show Boat - I've heard the audio of Paul Robeson singing Ol' Man River before but seeing him performing it in this film had me shook. Made everything happening before and after quite insignificant.

Things to Come - Things that'll put you to sleep = this film. When I dozed off some dull war drama was going on and when I woke up some dour science fiction thing was going on, Duck Dodgers played straight. I'm not sure if any of the actors maintained eye contact at any point throughout the film, they were mostly preaching and staring off into the distance.

i only know "the cradles" (1935) https://letterboxd.com/film/the-cradles/ is part of the "trilogy". otherwise, it is a poll-related fresh-new discovery and further details have yet to be investigated :?: in any case, i am going to vote for both (even though they might get disqualified for poll due to IMDb's sabotage).

there is one specific peculiar detail i (somehow) noticed while watching films from 1936 which (somewhat) bothers my mind :?: :?: :?: why such unrelated characters like the caricature of Edna May Oliver in "The CooCoo Nut Grove" and Mickey's rival in "Mickey's Rival" indulge in the same strange way of action of rubbing their asses with red scarf while dancing (Edna) or dance-walking (rival) :?: :?: :?: was this just some common hype whim of 1936 dancefloor :?: :?: :?: or if not, what subliminal message the viewer in 1936 was thus getting :?: :?: :?:

thanks very much. i'm intrigued by this idea of the musician(s) featuring before the feature starts, like it's calling into question what the film is really about. in the case of in der nacht, like with jeunne fille au jardin, it seems to be more the music or the musician since there isn't really plot per se, while in the fountain of arethusa it would be the mythic story playing out, even though the structure is fundamentally the same for the two kirsanoff films. it always brings me back to rivette (of course, i'm always connecting everything to rivette) but it's neat to see films from the 30s that present this idea also.
